You're right, that's not the behavior of the living God. Yahweh gave us free will to return our love for Him or not. If we love Him, then we love the character He created in us, uncorrupted and perfect. If we hate Him, then we hate the character He created in us and hate spreads through mankind like the covid virus is now. He can't stand mankind hating itself and wiping itself out of existence.
