Hi my Creationist friends! I have a question: You reject the Theory of Evolution but can you please share with me your understanding of the theory? [Spirituality & Religion]

I mean seriously. Not getting in your jabs and barbs but just your honest understanding of what evolution is. I do genuinely find that most people who reject evolution also have a very limited or distorted understanding of it.
How familiar are you with the evidence?
What are your main stumbling blocks to accepting it? If you're being honest, are they a lack of evidence or because they conflict with your faith?

Let's be civil, let's be honest.

Yeah, let's explain in 140 characters the theory of evolution!
You know, the complicated theory that even evolution experts can't completely explain.
@Budwick

You can take as many characters as you like. I'm not asking your to summarize the entire field, just share your understanding of the theory.
As much or as little as you like🙂

@Budwick The frequency and distribution of alleles changes

That’s it... that’s evolution.

if that’s too complicated for you, let me know and I’ll use crayon instead.

Or perhaps you could point out the parts that "even evolution experts can't completely explain"

Sure - WTF are alleles?
There are gaps in many fossil records.
How did it all begin? How did life spring forth from,.. what ever?

Bring your crayons!
@Budwick

Hey bud...she's probably going to give you a fairly detailed answer. Do you think you're up for that or will you just hand wave it away and declare that you don't care about the evidence because your mind is made up?

Just curious.
Budwick · 70-79, M
@Pikachu Yeah, it's gonna be a doozy! She's been writing for hours now! Usually it's just couple insults, some scientific word jibberish [no doubt to impress somebody].

But THIS time, I bet there's lot's more insults and reams of all kinds of sciency stuff to put me in my place.

I can not wait! 🍿
@Budwick

Hmmm.
The fact that you call it "scientific word gibberish" does not bode well for your ability to appreciate the answer you are likely to receive.

You don't have to feel intimidated by "sciency stuff". When you ask for evidence and evidence is then shared i don't know why you think they're trying to show you up or put you in your place.
Do you feel that way about anyone who gives you an answer which may be a little too complex for you? Or is that just when it comes to people you disagree with?

Well at least try to approach the information in good faith. Assume, whatever your opinion of her personally that she is sharing scientifically accurate information. It then becomes your responsibility to investigate or failing that, to withhold judgement.
Budwick · 70-79, M
@Pikachu Yeah sure.
She must be looking up the hard words - it's been a long time.
@Budwick
Yeah sure.
I'll hold you to that.
No hand waving dismissals.
No accusations of trying to put you in your place with "sciency stuff".
Just a reasoned assessment of the information.
it's been a long time.
lol whenever you don't respond to me for a long time should i assume that you're spending hours agonizing over what to write...or should i assume you do other things besides SW?😜
Budwick · 70-79, M
@Pikachu I bet your demon gal-pal is out roasting a goat right now!
@Budwick

lol is she burning the fatty parts of the liver as an offering? Maybe tearing a dove in half and spattering its blood on an altar?
Because that's really more of a biblical thing.😉

Still, please try to approach this with some intellectual honesty.
If you enter it expecting to fight then you're just going to have a fight.
Understand, she is sincere in her beliefs just as you are. You know that you're no angel so don't get sanctimonious if she isn't either.
Just address the evidence on its own merits.
If you find that things are going over your head then just accept that you're not yet equipped to make an informed decision and withhold judgement until such time as you are prepared to familiarize yourself with the body of evidence. If indeed you decide you care about the evidence.
Don't retreat into the escapist comfort of enmity because that will kill any opportunity for dialogue before it has begun.
Budwick · 70-79, M
@Pikachu I am expecting condescending bullshit.
If anything at all.
@Budwick

Sounds like you've already made up your mind not to take any of it seriously.

Just thought i'd try to convince you to approach this openly instead of antagonistically.
Never mind.
Budwick · 70-79, M
@Pikachu What would be dishonest would be to say that I expect something different or better from you or her than I've gotten before.

You hate God.
You hate people that love God.
You love science.
You love yourselves.

Telling me I'm an asshole in nice, soft words id=s what is intellectually dishonest.
@Budwick

Can you swear in the name of the lord that you're actually intending to keep an open mind to this evidence?
If not then don't get defensive when i say as much.
You hate God.
You hate people that love God.
You really believe that, don't you? That's what you think of us...
That's so sad.
Budwick · 70-79, M
@Pikachu What evidence?
@Budwick
What evidence?
Wait and see🙂
Keep an open mind.
Don't hate.

Good luck👍

@Budwick an allele is a version of a gene. An example is different eye colours between members of a family. Same gene location, but different versions of the gene for each family member

if that’s too patronising, then try... one of two or more DNA sequences occurring at a particular gene locus.

I’m more than happy to explain any part of this which may be unclear.

You keep asking and I’ll keep addressing your questions
Budwick · 70-79, M
@newjaninev2 What a pleasant, cogent response!

So, if something in the environment should change somehow making it favorable to one eye color over another (using your example), the ones with the favored eye color would tend to survive and the other not as well.

I learned that as 'natural selection'.

Sounds like the phenomena they use to breed 'designer dogs' like Labrador + Poodle = Labradoodle.
[Feel free to use my Labradoodle example if you like. Everyone knows about Labradoodles.]
newjaninev2 · 56-60, F
@Budwick Yup, but two things to note:

1. Overall survival of the individual doesn’t matter...What matters is that the individual survives long enough to replicate its genes. Once it has achieved that, it’s immaterial whether it lives or dies.

You’re here to replicate your genes... that’s why they made you. You’re an escape pod for your parents’ genes, just as your children are an escape pod for your genes.

2. Artificial selection is guided by us, in order to achieve a specific goal.

Natural selection is determined by the constantly changing interplay between sex, death, and the environment.

Thee are no goals. Each generation of genes is delivered into an unpredictable environment. Either they will manage to in turn replicate in that environment... or they won’t.

Genes march backwards into the future.

The stunning result is that you, and I, every other living thing currently on the planet (mainly bacteria), are the current product of an unbroken chain of successful replication over the last 3.5 billion years. Every single one of your ancestors managed to successfully replicate over 3.5 billion years.

(I’m not the latest product of that unbroken chain, because I have a daughter, so the title passed to her... my escape pod) 🥰

@newjaninev2
that’s why they made you.
That's why GOD made you.

Thanks for the lesson.
