Do we need God for Morality? [Spirituality & Religion]

Obviously the secular answer is a resounding NO.
But if you're a theist who says "yes", i want to hear your reasoning.

yes people are wretched self-indulgent undisciplined opportunists. (may be talking about myself here) who need someone to be held accountable to

@Penny God bless you🤗
who need someone to be held accountable to
For sure.
And the "Someone" to whom i am held accountable is myself and other human beings.
I don't need some distant father figure to make me feel that i should do well by my fellow human beings.
Penny · 46-50, F
@Pikachu well, for me it's not about doing well for other human beings in general, that comes naturally. it's more about making moral personal choices and having a guide to what those are. i think they may be different for everyone. i'm no goody two shoes so I need the help. if you are perfect in every way then maybe you don't need a distant father figure but i know i sure do. i relish the guidance i receive personally. otherwise it's like floating on the sea in a life raft with no one coming to help you. and honestly, I do view God as like a sky father figure but also as the whole of humanity in itself, so I do let other people guide me sometimes as well. but of course everything in line with my personal belief.
@Penny
i relish the guidance i receive personally
I get that.
But what we're discussing here is not "do you like being accountable to sky daddy" but "do you need sky daddy for a basis of morality".
Penny · 46-50, F
@Pikachu apparently I do
@Penny

Well sure. Maybe you do.
But does everybody? Does morality only exist because of accountability to god?
Penny · 46-50, F
@Pikachu God granted morality, such as of the depths you perhaps may never be open to experiencing if you don't accept Jesus into your heart. they say, and for my own reasons I think it's true, you can only come to know God through Jesus Christ
@Penny

If god granted morality, why do we find these fundamental moral tenets throughout culture and time before and beyond the reach of christianity or other abrahamic faiths?
Penny · 46-50, F
@Pikachu i'm not talking about scripture or moral tenets but personal guidance
@Penny

Same answer.
If these moral tenets exist without the personal guidance of jesus/god, how can you say that god's personal guidance is necessary for morality?
Penny · 46-50, F
@Pikachu again i will repeat, i am not talking about moral tenets. i'm not saying it is necessary for everyone, but for myself personally yes. a sheep without a shepard is just that - a sheep without a shepard. not saying the sheep will necessarily fall prey to wolves..
That’s almost the only way to make it. @Penny
@Penny

Well if all your saying i that you need a god to behave morally then that's one thing.
But this is a question about morality in general.
Penny · 46-50, F
@Pikachu i'd still say yes, especially if one takes a pantheist view. if God is humanity, we learn morality from one another. some moral stances such as what is fair and what is not fair, may be inherent in individuals but i'd say it is mostly learned. like for example look at the seven deadly sins - this is a God based idea which we can learn of ourselves and of others from. the basis is morality. can you tell me one soul who has never been guilty of any of these?
@Penny
if God is humanity,
...is rather a different religious stance than one can only know god through jesus...
Penny · 46-50, F
@Pikachu yes it is but i think Jesus would approve. maybe not everyone needs Jesus in their lives. who knows?
@Penny

who knows
Penny · 46-50, F
@Pikachu I'm not a theist btw, but i do think the bible or other christian and also non christian teachings are valuable educational tools
@Penny

How can you not be a theist but believe that jesus is the only way to know god?
Penny · 46-50, F
@Pikachu i didnt read that in a book. someone told me that. maybe they got it from a book though. who knows? oh, i thought theist meant something else. (just looked it up) i suppose i am a theist then - noun: theist; plural noun: theists
a person who believes in the existence of a god or gods, specifically of a creator who intervenes in the universe.
