Do we need God for Morality? [Spirituality & Religion]

Obviously the secular answer is a resounding NO.
But if you're a theist who says "yes", i want to hear your reasoning.

Yes! Because there is no accountability to God otherwise. God sees everything. People who don't believe in Jesus slander and treat people nice who have been nice to them but not their enemies or those who haven't been nice. That's low class, , Satanic, evil, and makes the world greedy, dog eat dog world! Not like Jesus taught to love everyone. To treat people the way we want to be treated regardless of how they treat us. It makes for a more lovely world!

Unlike people who DO believe in jesus who only call people with whom they disagree hateful, arrogant narcissists...
I don't bring that up to be petty but to drive home the point that believers in christ are JUST as guilty of slander and ill treatment.
Because there is no accountability to God otherwise
...So? This is only an argument if one first accepts that god is necessary for a moral grounding...

Not at all like the unGodly who won't forgive and hold grudges! Can I please send a pm
@Carazaa
Can I please send a pm
Nope.
I don't know if it's worse to hold grudges than it is to repeatedly deride the character of the person you are talking to when they upset you but lets just say they are equally wrong and get back to the subject.

You've said that god is necessary for morality because without god, there is no accountability to god.
Can you elaborate on that argument?

@Carazaa I find my being good to people being attributed to my religious beliefs-- utterly horrifying and wholly offensive.

@CopperCicada
What is it about Jesus you find offensive? He gave us the Golden rule! To treat people the Way we want to be treated! To pray for our enemies and those who despitefully use us! What is offensive about that? It made The Vikings stop stealing and Sweden the most peaceful country in the world!
@Carazaa I think it is a grotesque premise that the only reason a man does not rape women and kill them is because of fear of God's judgement. Fear of punishment is barely even on the ethical scale.

Obviously religion is not the single sure cause of engendering love and compassion either. Look what was done by the conquistadores in the New World. By men to fellow believers in the religious wars during the Reformation. Leopold in Africa. Witch trials.

Religion is meaningless without an innate capacity for love and compassion. Otherwise relgion just gives is new ways to be cruel to eachother.
Carazaa · F
@CopperCicada Did I say that? Who says that the only reason someone doesn't rape someone is because they are not a Christian. There are a lot of loving people being kind to those who are kind to them. But it is highly unusual for non Christians to be kind to a rapist or a murderer! True Christians, those born again and are saved will have compassion and pray for their souls!
@Carazaa Pikachu's OP is about whether we need God for morality. You seemed to answer an unqualified "yes".

@Carazaa Quote That's low class, trailertrash.Seriously? I hate to say it but that right there is one amazing example of how christians think ,you have the right to judge someone because they live in a trailer?????? Your true colors are not very pretty and i mean no disrespect to you ,this just shocked me.
@kodiac Yes. Being low class trailer trash-- litterally-- I let that slide.

@Carazaa
Because there is no accountability to God otherwise.
Why is supposed accountability to a mythical being necessary for morality?
Carazaa · F
@kodiac I would be happy to own or live in a trailer It was a figure of speech not literal, sorry if it offended you! I shouldn't have used that word.
think it is highly unusual for any non Christian to be kind to anyone who is not kind to them. Jesus said " being nice to those who are nice is easy but it's not easy to be loving to your enemies" there true Christians differ from the world.
kodiac · 22-25, M
@Carazaa Good samaritans are everywhere ,it's hard for me to believe you think only christians can be kind to people .I have never attacked or dissed your belief and i assume we are on different sides if not real enemies, kindness is in no way confined to so called christians .I understand your slip of the tongue with that phrase but if it isn't how you think truly why did it come out so easy?
Carazaa · F
@Sharon
The highest morality is to lay down your life for people. That is what God requires!
In the concentration camp there was a Godly man who stepped into the gas chamber instead of a young father of 4 kids in order to save that father so he could maybe see his kids again and raise them. That is Gods love in us!

@Carazaa
The highest morality is to lay down your life for people.
That's the action of a person. In what way is a god involved?
n the concentration camp there was a Godly man who stepped into the gas chamber instead of a young father
Do you have a verified reference for that story? In particular, how do you know the man was "godly" and not an Atheist or follower of some other religion?
Entwistle · 56-60, M
@Carazaa Many Buddhists do not treat people who have been bad to them badly in return.
Carazaa · F
@Sharon
Jesus taught us to lay down our life for a friend!
I haven't read the book about that guy who willingly died in the concentration camp but I will and will tell you!

Something else copied from older belief systems. Other animals sometimes adopt the same philosophy.

@Carazaa Nonsense, there are evil Christians and good people of other religions, or no religion.

@LeopoldBloom
Jesus taught us the Golden rule "Do unto others as you want them to do to you" "love your enemies"

Apparently so did a bunch of other people before him...
