Been reading it (the Hebrew parts of it) lately after Robert Alter's complete translation finally came out in December, and the Torah is probably about the most fucked up ancient literature I've ever read. I do not even have a chip on my shoulder about religion at all, and quite enjoy plunging myself into empathy the mindsets of ancient people, but that character is something else even by the fairly hardcore standards of ancient Near Eastern war gods. Nearing the end of [i]In the Wilderness[/i] ("Numbers" according to the English-Christian naming scheme) at this point, I was struck recently by how exactly the relationship between Mosheh and Yahweh parallels the "Faustian" type-story of a deal with the devil. Not hard to see how the "Gnostic" Christian sects' interpretation of all those stories arose.
