If we made first contact with intelligent life how significantly would religion change and would it potentially make humans more xenophobic? [Spirituality & Religion]

It may change religion, but not born again believers.

We would all finally band together as one happy family and hate on the aliens.
Religion probably wouldn't change at all really. A vast majority of religious people wouldn't believe the truth if it was staring them in the face.
As for the population becoming more xenophobic, it would depend on if they were friendly and who was in charge of communication with them ect. I'd like to believe we'd all be cool with it so we could learn from them, especially to know if there are other species of aliens out there but we're so mistrusting I can't imagine the people in charge (now especially.) Would be very understanding.

If they've been watching our television and listening to our radio, they would be hiding and never want to make contact with us. Either that, or they would want to wipe us out to make sure we don't spread.

Either way, xenophobia is well entrenched in human nature so I personally think that won't change much. Religion would be interesting. I'm not sure if it would survive the contact but as others have said, it would probably take the new circumstances into itself as it has done for millennia.

Mind you, I'm very agnostic when it comes to life elsewhere in the universe. Not that I think that we are the ultimate form of life or the peak of creation, but just that we are the result of happenstance.
I can't imagine why it wouldn't. We already find plenty of reasons to hate other human beings.
Imagine a species that does not think the way we do or hold the same fundamental values that we do?
It will only change to accommodate the religion, not eliminate it.

Religious leaders will be very flexible in their interpretations

Nothing would change -- humans are ignorant apes.

assuming we survive first contact or they don't lock at us n stick us in a space zoo since by comparison we are to them like cavemen are to us. religion wont even matter at that point.

If their chronological history of emergent beliefs matched ours an important theory would be validated. The main religions would die even faster.

The religious would just extend their beliefs to include everything in the Universe. They covered that in Genesis.

The only intelligent life would be the Lord God, Jehovah, Himself and man's religion would definitely disappear over night.

Hmmmmm would d aliens b dark in color perhaps
MartinTheFirst · 26-30, M
why would it change?
@MartinTheFirst

It would force people to abandon the notion that humans are special and unique in the eyes of god.
