Are science and religion compatible? [Spirituality & Religion]

There are many religions out there and many creation stories. From what I've seen, many people would prefer to believe their religious texts than accepts some of the findings of science. Discuss.

Nope. The bible doesn't work as a science textbook because it doesn't measure up to the standards and requirements of it.

The bible teaches us how to go to heaven, not how the heavens go. - Galileo Galilei

@NeloAngelo The Bible wasn't meant to be a science textbook, that's why it doesn't measure up to the standards and requirements of it. Why would anybody think it is? 🤔
NeloAngelo · 26-30, M
@NankerPhelge what i mean is science takes tests, evidence, it can be duplicated reliably and consistently by anyone. The bible contradicts many things discovered by science and doesn't have the evidence that science has.

Science says the earth is billions of years old and Evolution exists.

Bible says no. Coz the bible says so
NankerPhelge · 61-69, M
@NeloAngelo I don't know how old the earth is, so I can't argue about that. Mind you, a billion years is an astronomically long time. I mean, a billion seconds is 31,688 years. Has the earth really been here that long?
NeloAngelo · 26-30, M
@NankerPhelge carbon dating has put dinosaurs hundreds of millions years old at least and some of the oldest fossils preserved on the sea floor are several times older than that. A far cry from the bibles indication of only 6000 years old.
NankerPhelge · 61-69, M
@NeloAngelo Does the Bible actually state that the earth is only 6000 years old? I should imagine it's much older than that.
NeloAngelo · 26-30, M
@NankerPhelge its in the book of genesis. Some have it as 8-10k years but the most common and widely spread says 6.
NankerPhelge · 61-69, M
@NeloAngelo I've still got the old Bible I used in school. I'll look and see what it says in Genesis.
Bushranger · 70-79, M
@NankerPhelge It was calculated by James Ussher, an Irish Archbishop in the 17th century. He based his calculations on calculating life spans of people mentioned in the Old Testament and other events, such as the creation. Can't say that it has any significance, other than being an amusing historical nonsense.

Mind you, there are probably people who do believe that the Earth's age can be measured in thousands of years, not billions.
NankerPhelge · 61-69, M
@Bushranger I dunno. One time span seems too long, the other seems too short.
Bushranger · 70-79, M
@NankerPhelge Yeah, 4.5 billion years seems a long time. But that amount of time would have been needed to get everything to point it is now. Unless you believe in creation, of course.
Bushranger · 70-79, M
@NankerPhelge Ok, just did a bit more checking. There's a group call Young Earth Creationists (YEC) that believe in a literal translation of Genesis that the Earth is about 10,000 years old and was created in six 24 hour days. There goes all that science I learnt 🤣
NeloAngelo · 26-30, M
@Bushranger also we still have plato's works and he's even older than that XD
NankerPhelge · 61-69, M
@Bushranger I still think it's older than that, but I doubt it's billions of years old. I don't think it was created in 6 days either.
Bushranger · 70-79, M
@NeloAngelo No, sorry, his works were created by God to test our faith 😉
Bushranger · 70-79, M
@NankerPhelge I'm glad to hear that lol. Is it only because of the difficulty in comprehending such a huge number?
NankerPhelge · 61-69, M
@Bushranger I just think a billion years is an unfeasibly long time. Like I said before, a billion seconds is 31,688 years, I checked that on a calculator more than once. From that, imagine how long a billion hears would be.
Bushranger · 70-79, M
@NankerPhelge Nope, can't even begin to imagine it. It's like the concept of light years, just way too far to comprehend. But I just go with the flow.
newjaninev2 · 56-60, F
@NankerPhelge the Earth is 4.5 billion years old.

Expansion of the singularity began 13.7 billion years ago
Bushranger · 70-79, M
@newjaninev2 But it is hard to comprehend, given that we consider a wet weekend to be a long time.
suzie1960 · 61-69, F
@NeloAngelo
carbon dating has put dinosaurs hundreds of millions years old at least
Carbon dating is no good for those time periods. Potassium-Argon dating is used in those cases.
NeloAngelo · 26-30, M
@suzie1960 ah. Your right. I got em mixed up.
NankerPhelge · 61-69, M
@NeloAngelo What right? 🤔
NeloAngelo · 26-30, M
@NankerPhelge i mentioned the wrong dating test earlier. He corrected me but its still hundreds of millions.
NankerPhelge · 61-69, M
@NeloAngelo Who is "he"? I asked what right you meant when you said it was suzie1960's right. Her right to what? Her right to say what she believes? She certainly does have a right to do that. But who is the "he" who corrected you? I'm totally confused now. 🤔
NeloAngelo · 26-30, M
@NankerPhelge not his right he was right as in correct.
