Mythology anyone? [Spirituality & Religion]

Yeah, so, I love reading/studying mythology. Anyone else? If so, what is your favorite type of mythology?

For me, it's Norse myth. I love how violent the tales are and the idea of honor/bravery being exalted above all other traits. A lot of Anglo history is based on Norse culture. It's where we get the English days of the week. Hell, it's even where the word "hell" comes from (Hel from Helheim). Plus, it has been making a huge splash in pop-culture, lately (Thor movies, American Gods show, latest God of War installment).

Lastly, my main reason, LOKI! He is the smartest, most cunning, diabolical hero (yes, I wrote hero) of all the Nordic tales. Wherever you see Loki, there is a plot twist brewing. Where Loki goes, mischief follows. Loki is the reason chaos happens bit also usually the solution. There are others like him (Thoth, Mercury, Hermes) but none quite as awesome.

[c=#7700B2]Loki is not the smartest in norse mythology. he might be the most cunning but he is not the smartest and he is not a hero, he is the cause of Ragnarok[/c]
Hikurai · 41-45, M
@PlumBerries yes Woden has been known as the smartest but I was just giving my opinion. And yes, Loki will be along side Surtr during Ragnarok... but certainly not the cause, at least by All Father's pemonition.
PlumBerries · 31-35, F
[c=#7700B2]Loki tricked another god into killing Baldr and was punished for it by being tied down under a snake dripping venom onto him and when he broke free would be the start of Ragnarok. To say he was not the cause of it well just would not be correct[/c]
Hikurai · 41-45, M
@PlumBerries I didn't realize Ragnarok had started already... Baldr was killed by his brother a while ago. That's a long period of grieving. There are a lot of events which occur to bring about Ragnarok, most of which are natural disasters caused by the gods and Jotun. But whatever, I still like Loki, even more if he "starts" the end of the world.
PlumBerries · 31-35, F
[c=#7700B2]yeah baldr was killed by his brother who was tricked into doing it by Loki.. Loki's children including Hel are a big part of it as well. And it is mythology, so obviously Ragnarok has not started but it is essentially a story and the end is all ready well known [/c]
PlumBerries · 31-35, F
[c=#7700B2]I like Loki as well but I see him for what he was and that being a intelligent trickster [/c]
Hikurai · 41-45, M
@PlumBerries the point I was making is that he also helped the gods out of a lot troubles (admittedly caused mostly by him). Loki is the reason Thor has his hammer. He the one who caused the Master Builder to fail in his task to complete the walls of Asgard in the set time. He aided Thor in killing the Frost Giant King. Loki is dick, no doubt, and he only cares about himself but he is the reason the stories are worth reading. Because without his meddling these tales would be dull... that's the point I am trying to make. He is a hero in my books for being the only god who to could be the cause and solution to most problems that occur with the Aesir and Vanir. He is a walking plot twist.
PlumBerries · 31-35, F
[c=#7700B2]I agree with you about somethings there but he caused many more problems. I strongly disagree with you about Loki being the only reason those stories were not dull. I get that you really like him but without him Norse mythology would still be one of the best mythologies ever..

He also only fixed his problems because he was mostly always terrified of what Thor would do to him if he didn't. He was essentially a coward in that aspect.. He is a very cool character but he doesn't make or brake Norse mythology..

I respect your opinion though but yeah just don't agree with it[/c]
Hikurai · 41-45, M
@PlumBerries and I respect your opinion as well and you are right he did fix his problems as result of fear for Thor and his father's wrath. I just see things differently than most people (a lot of people disagree with me on most topics). I am the guy who latches on to the glitches in the stories. I look for troublemakers and schemers because those are the ones who are going to truly challenge the supposed heroes and Loki does a fine job at that. I am straight-forward type of person and Loki absolutely isn't I guess that is another reason I like him.

And yes, without Loki the tales would still be great but he does bring a unique humor to the telling, does he not?
PlumBerries · 31-35, F
[c=#7700B2]yeah he definitely does bring a unique humour to the stories, as does Thor in a different way. They are all great characters and each bring uniqueness to the stories that make it imo the best of all mythologies[/c]
Hikurai · 41-45, M
@PlumBerries Haha yes Thor is an idiot at times too (but in my opinion, a typical man, especially in his interactions with Sif). Even Odin has his moments.

By the way, thank you for having a different opinion than me. I hope to see you more on my topics... please, keep challenging me. I am new here and was worried I wouldn't meet any "devil's advocates." (How boring that would be).

And don't ever spare my feelings, that shit is lame. 😁
PlumBerries · 31-35, F
[c=#7700B2]its nice to have a conversation about something and have a different opinion and it not lead to a argument or anything. very rare for this place, and I love talking about Norse mythology, something else that is rare here.. so I have very much enjoyed talking with you and I am normally honest about what I think but I never will not think of someones feelings.. that's just me :)[/c]
Hikurai · 41-45, M
Well, you are definitely a very cool person and I hope to meet others like you. I much prefer surrounding myself around people who challenge my ideas. I know what you mean about having a different opinion and it not leading to an argument. There are some seriously sensitive people on the internet; I am not one of them. I enjoy people question my opinion. How else will I develop a better understanding of things? Plus, I feel if life isn't a struggle, then what's the point of living?

Anyways, I am all about history and mythology. I also enjoy science and religion... I talk about pretty much anything but I do not claim to be an expert on any of it. So, if you ever want to talk about something that is not "typical" I am all ears or eyes in this case or fingers or... you are looking like an idiot again, Nate. Anyways, nice chatting with you.
PlumBerries · 31-35, F
[c=#7700B2]lol thank you and same back to you. I don't get to talk much about stuff like religion and history and it not end up in some sort of argument so that would be nice and also by no all means am I expert in any of this stuff. I just enjoy it and so on[/c]
Hikurai · 41-45, M
Oh, know what you mean... religion is the worse for starting a conflict but I love it... people get so upset 😁. Also bear (I never know if that is the right bare/bear, some English major I am) in mind, I am a writer and love creating stories, so I sometimes add my own spin on things. This irritates the hell out of some people. But theories and ideas are what make inventions reality.
PlumBerries · 31-35, F
[c=#7700B2]bear is the animal lol :p
yeah I know what you mean though and religion is a very touchy subject but a interesting one at least and I wish more people could calmly discuss it[/c]
Hikurai · 41-45, M
@PlumBerries 😂 I know it's an animal but it also has other meaning, I think (as you can tell I am not afraid to admit being wrong haha). I am the same way with the different lie/lay/lying/laids.

I was raised in a Christian church and was going to be a pastor at one time... things changed and I am not a follower of Christ anymore but still love talking about the religion especially now from a more open-minded point of view.

This is just an assumption... I suspect by your manner of spelling and certain word usages and overall personality that you are of British origins (hope I am right and didn't make myself look like and idiot)?
PlumBerries · 31-35, F
[c=#7700B2]lol just pointing it out since you asked..

hey I was raised as a Christian myself till I stopped being one at least.. we have a bit in common I see :)

lol nah im Australian[/c]
Hikurai · 41-45, M
Haha I am such a dick... Australian, of course! Sorry, Australians, Canadians, Brits have very similar manners of spelling. We Americans spell things wrong. What threw me off was your usage of the word "bin." My wife is British and that is slang she would use.

Awesome, another wayward Christian! I do hope we can talk about this further sometime... oh I should be working right now 😂. I am guessing your interest in mythology is very similar to my reasoning (I wanted to know what other civilizations believed).
PlumBerries · 31-35, F
[c=#7700B2]lol well now im curious what you call a bin instead of a bin lol?

yeah im up for a discussion on religion, history, mythology and whatever any time :)[/c]
Hikurai · 41-45, M
We call it a trash can... or at least I call it that lol.

Yes, I would love to talk to about all those topics too 😊.
PlumBerries · 31-35, F
[c=#7700B2]isn't a trash can like a smaller metal type of bin though? lol[/c]
Hikurai · 41-45, M
I call it all a trash can... I am a very simple person at times (all the time). Lol
PlumBerries · 31-35, F
[c=#7700B2]I think a bin is more simple compared to trash can.. gotta talk more just to say that lol, I don't think you are as simple as you claim you are buddy :p[/c]
Hikurai · 41-45, M
Damn... you are right... bin is a lot easier to say. 😂.

Well, I like to pretend to be simple. I don't want people to think I am pretentious or egotistical. I want people to see me as their equal. I find people respect me more and want to talk to me if I seem more simple.

I am, however, not simple, so this is a hard task. 😔
PlumBerries · 31-35, F
[c=#7700B2]haha so complicated would be a good way to describe you ?[/c]
