On what date did Islam officially become a "race"? [Spirituality & Religion]

I first heard of Islam in 1974 (aged 12) and I was taught then that it was a religion, but I was never taught that it was a race. Why, then, do some people say it is "racist" to not like Islam? LOGICAL ANSWERS ONLY, PLEASE.
