For the same reason there is so much hatred based on ethnicity or heritage: People either hate or fear that which is different and that which they do not understand. That is my observation at least. And then of course, there are those who would condemn an entire group of people over the actions of a few, because again, the are often ignorant of that which they hate, and do not see individuals; they would rather label them by their differences and cast them all into the same bad light.
