human beings are not gullible or lacking in the independence of mind. Human beings are smart and curious and nobody’s fool. I mean all are vulnerable at some time in Life and group think is a powerful mechanism. Still the general thesis that religion creates God is flawed imho.

Imho God is a projection of the human psychological architecture. We externalise our individual micro level experience into a macro level construction. We are omnipresent in our own lives and we are omnipotent in our own lives. It is a step of astonishing simplicity to imagine that our own dual nature of conscious/ unconscious is indicative of the nature of meta reality. The functional advantage of doing so is to make a God in Humanity’s image to legitimate our own nature.

Of course God is also dysfunctional in certain aspects and once the true nature of God is understood and shared then will evolve also. Denial of God serves just to suppress this necessary evolution.

Human beings aren't gullible?! Are of independent mind? Propaganda? Gun loving? Believing/taking the news at face value? Voting for Trump? And levels of independence vary from huge dependence to complete detachment... Furthermore, God is no projection...This is an image of perfection, not common humanity. There is religion - organized creeds - and spirituality; these aren't one and the same thing. Gods came first; then God. But it's also kind of chicken and egg. However perhaps it's no coincidence that the two biggest warmongers are also allegedly the most religious... In God We Trust

well sure but essentially human beings are smart and self interested.
God isn't father christmas so what is it but a human projection?
Religion channels but could not of itself make smart selfish humans believe in so many gods over so long a time in such diverse cultures.
Just sayin there is a way out of the stagnant chicken or the egg paradox.

@sogdianrock Not all human beings are smart; not all are self-interested, fortunately; some need God - it's all they have

relatively all humans are smart.Think Hairless apes! Sure self interested - have to be to eat when hungry r dress when cold.
Lots of clever theists.
I just think a better answer is needed than saying all theists throughout human history were stupid. Plainly not I mean look at Cathedrals!

@sogdianrock I'm not saying theists are stupid. I'm saying not all human beings are smart
Cathedrals - the power abdomen glory of workshop... The beautiful Hindu temple nearby too. Represents the best of humanity for me. I see no need to escape this. Evolution towards something better than self interest beyond basic needs is very much needed though

my mistake.
Well, with respect you might not like all humans but you have to concede all are smart! Talking, creation and use of language, walking, creating the wheel, cooking, music! haha sooo smart! Even Tronald Dump!
Evolution away from the stagnant theism atheism standoff is vital. As matters stand God will be the death of humans.

Smart isn't necessarily such a big deal. I love people
I and many others aren't caught up in the theist/atheist standoff
Your issue, so own it - with respect

haha Humans left Africa just 100,000 years ago! Smart is what defines humans!
I am a humanist also.
I am personally uninterested in the theist atheist standoff. I am content with my resolution of it but it is a popular topic here so I thought I would contribute. That is what this place does isn't it?
best wishes
:)
