human beings are not gullible or lacking in the independence of mind. Human beings are smart and curious and nobody’s fool. I mean all are vulnerable at some time in Life and group think is a powerful mechanism. Still the general thesis that religion creates God is flawed imho.

Imho God is a projection of the human psychological architecture. We externalise our individual micro level experience into a macro level construction. We are omnipresent in our own lives and we are omnipotent in our own lives. It is a step of astonishing simplicity to imagine that our own dual nature of conscious/ unconscious is indicative of the nature of meta reality. The functional advantage of doing so is to make a God in Humanity’s image to legitimate our own nature.

Of course God is also dysfunctional in certain aspects and once the true nature of God is understood and shared then will evolve also. Denial of God serves just to suppress this necessary evolution.

Very thoughtful words...

However, I believe God exists, but not in a figurative existence ...

God is evolving in its existence... God continues creating in and outside of itself...

That is how I believe it...

hi Soossie
I have sought to accommodate the reported very real personal experience believers have of God. No disrespect intended. It seems to me crass to say believers are stupid or misled.
It seems to me that religion is a social level rationalisation of individual experiences of God.
It seems to me that believers as much as atheists have to address the problem posed by the sheer number of Gods and religions throughout human history. We are serial believers in Gods.
My thesis is that the evolution of God needs to evolve quickly as humanity faces extinction not least because of reliance on literal Gods.
Sure I respect belief. However I also ask of all persons to examine evidence and to evolve ideas together.

May I ask you what you think about the function of God, or idea of God is to believers??

hi Soossie
Of course you can. However I have to walk my dog as it has stopped raining. Always delighted to hear from you! I will get back to you on this.
I do seek a synthesis of theism and atheism. It is clear to me that Gods exist and the point is what are they.
I believe Gods are the projection from the psychological architecture of the human mind. This probably began with consciousness which itself developed when the corpus Coliseum formed. (The brain is divided into the right and left hemisphere , and the two halves are connected by the corpus callosum.) At that point I suspect humans started to experience their own consciousness as voices and externalised that as a Universal being instructing them. God is created in our psychological image - all seeing like we are in our own lives. The step taken with religion is to create a community of shared belief in the external. The function of God is that of consciousness - to allow us self direction and an evolutionary step of huge significance.

ps;
back now. Thought about your question. Well everything believers report as emanating from having their relationship with God. I saw someone here and written how they feared nothing having God by their side. That a typical believer God benefit. Soldiers would have war Gods - in WW1 all German Soldiers wore belt buckles with Gott mit uns ("God with us") on them. Presumably so did everyone else in some format or other.
