It is a matter of faith, and millions of people have personally experienced God / a supreme power in their lives, whatever shape or form their God may be. It doesn`t need to be proved, it just is.

hi Celine
Just is a small word for such an amazing human capacity to believe in a God of the Gaps! I personally believe that is exactly what God is and in being so has served humanity by allowing certainty (misplaced albeit) to remove terror of the unknown. Science now fills that gap - or pseudo science which represents theory as fact - equally as mistakenly I am sure. Reality - whatever it is - is stranger than we can know.
Ignorance is not to be underestimated as an adversary nor religion appreciated for bridging ignorance. Just sayin really people appear to have needed a God and some still do. It is why that is interesting and that why is not just but amazing You are right.
Best wishes
:)

hi Celine
Atheists are not breaking down because they don't have the safety net of an afterlife.
haha that is a matter of opinion!
You say it really is not.
Look at the world! It is in a chronic state and this has happened during the rule of atheists including world wars. Religions for all their faults have acted as a brake on human greed.
You say: We're not just animals anymore. We don't need lies to feel comfortable.
We may use them as crutches but we don't need them
We really are animals and there you go again with the small world just. I watched butterflies in my garden the other day and was amazed by their beauty initially and then realised how violent their lives are! We are not so different.
Yours is a great post here. I encourage you to consider what religion is - having accepted it is not about some sort of Cosmic Santa Clause. Look at the lies we tell ourselves instead of religion! Nuclear weapons for example have become a new security blanket which is as big a lie as God - both man made.
Best wishes

hi Celine
You cannot apologise and then insult. That is adding injury to insult.
As an atheist myself I observe the development of Capitalism which is essentially atheistic and consider the damage done by theocracies as nothing compared to what has happened since.
It seems to me that you are vehement in condemning the God of the gap while avoiding Atheism's own gaps.
Sure humans are responsible but religion is a brake. A horrible brake but nonetheless.
It does not matter who is to blame if we are all in peril - do you see?
I admire your ballsy attitude btw.
Best wishes

Why do you care what creationists think? Scared your bubble will pop if you don't enforce your veiws by belittling theirs?

what I don't get is why the onus is on me to provide proof?
You prove to me god don't exist ?

Can't one believe that the initial spark of life involves some element of divine creation, while still accepting that evolution and natural selection explain all future development? That's not necessarily my belief system but I don't believe it's precluded by evolutionary science since I'm not sure there is a known scientific explanation for the initial origin of life.

I like your phrase "God of gaps". I have sometimes thought of God as the answer to questions that can't yet be answered in other ways. Which means that my notion of God is, ironically, an evolving concept....

That depends of what people's definition of what 'God' represents. Usually it is the larger religious groups that see Him as a universal being that just so happen to exist, and sometimes seen as multiple beings in other philosophies. I don't blame these types, they need something to believe in, stupid or not. Scientists also go with the belief that nature or the probability of the universe itself is their creation tool (or 'God' if you wanna see it that way) and that possibly explainable forces are at work and they try to get answers.
Was it just a chance that our Earth was placed just close and far enough from the sun to create chemical reaction that sustained life? Or did someone or something design it this way to happen?
Either way you get both sides into the argument. Those that witness natural disasters could either say, 'It was God's work' or 'The cruelty of motherearth and all it's scientific explinations'.
Personally the igonarance I've witnessed amongst people come from those larger groups of worship, from doctorination or dogmas. It's the scientists I've noticed are closer to God because they are despirately trying to prove that he exists or not.

Religion always begs the question and it contradicts itself too often to take it at face value.

I won't discuss Santa again or I will tell him of your silly tantrums here.
Go eat your veggies or you just might have to go to bed early.

are you making the assumption that all people that believe in God, don't believe in evolution?
