Creationists: when you argue that evolution doesn't explain how life began therefore god done it, [Spirituality & Religion]

do you realize that you're just making a god of the gaps argument?
God used to be responsible for natural disasters and the tides and disease and mental illness....but now we know that god is not necessary to explain these things.
So when you say "Life is far too complex to have arisen without god" all you're actually saying is " I don't have an answer to this question, therefore it was god".

Same old argument from ignorance.

hi Celine
Just is a small word for such an amazing human capacity to believe in a God of the Gaps! I personally believe that is exactly what God is and in being so has served humanity by allowing certainty (misplaced albeit) to remove terror of the unknown. Science now fills that gap - or pseudo science which represents theory as fact - equally as mistakenly I am sure. Reality - whatever it is - is stranger than we can know.
Ignorance is not to be underestimated as an adversary nor religion appreciated for bridging ignorance. Just sayin really people appear to have needed a God and some still do. It is why that is interesting and that why is not just but amazing You are right.
Best wishes

Well, no not really. We are full of delusions. Comfort is vital in order that humans can function. Plenty of scientists are religious and have been own the past. I am not sure a security blanket is the most accurate analogy. Sure it covers some of what is going on. Maybe a more accurate representation would be a sticking plaster. It covers up a wound and is temporary and serves a purpose.
Personally I am not religious but I do marvel how it is woven into our every day lives without our even knowing what it is.
Also when religion is abandoned other delusions pour in - some pseudo-science masquerading as truth. I saw a tv program on women's soccer the other day and a Dr had said it was harmful to women to play it and it was banned in the 1920's.
Anyway I think it is worth examining why religions persist and what purpose they serve. Obviously there is no God.

hi Celine
Atheists are not breaking down because they don't have the safety net of an afterlife.
haha that is a matter of opinion!
Religion of the gaps covers much more than the afterlife!
Psychological comfort is necessary for a social animal. A lie or construction is better than a void.

You say it really is not.
Look at the world! It is in a chronic state and this has happened during the rule of atheists including world wars. Religions for all their faults have acted as a brake on human greed.

You say: We're not just animals anymore. We don't need lies to feel comfortable.
We may use them as crutches but we don't need them

We really are animals and there you go again with the small world just. I watched butterflies in my garden the other day and was amazed by their beauty initially and then realised how violent their lives are! We are not so different.

Yours is a great post here. I encourage you to consider what religion is - having accepted it is not about some sort of Cosmic Santa Clause. Look at the lies we tell ourselves instead of religion! Nuclear weapons for example have become a new security blanket which is as big a lie as God - both man made.

hi Celine
You cannot apologise and then insult. That is adding injury to insult.
As an atheist myself I observe the development of Capitalism which is essentially atheistic and consider the damage done by theocracies as nothing compared to what has happened since.
It seems to me that you are vehement in condemning the God of the gap while avoiding Atheism's own gaps.
Sure humans are responsible but religion is a brake. A horrible brake but nonetheless.
It does not matter who is to blame if we are all in peril - do you see?
I admire your ballsy attitude btw.
Best wishes
