Why did god punish adam and eve for disobeying him and eating the fruit? [Spirituality & Religion]

Before they ate of the tree of knowledge, they had no understanding of good and evil. So how would they know it was bad to eat the fruit?

BTW, the original myth is not about apples, but a fragant fruit, apricots or oranges, more likely. I guess the idea is that of temptations, sensuality, pleasure.

@MalteseFalconPunch I don't know, but it kinda makes more sense to lure someone with a sweet fragrance. Unless they were thinking of making cider?
