I Wish Some Songs Didn't Mean So Much To Me

I Want Candy...
I grew up with 70's/80's pop radio so what can I say? Sassons they say soooo much...lucky for me I've been on a mission to explore the fringes of sound for a few decades now,but I still get a bit flattened by many of the songs which remind me of my last heartbreak-even after1 year plus of accceptance(?) and going it alone, life's not fair.
"institutionalised" by Suicidal Tendencies remains one of my childhood favorites, and Pete Townshend can still start the tears now and then-who else would pen such lines as"it's clear to all my friends that I habitually lie..."
Lou Reed has been known to do a bit of soul searching also...I'll be your mirror, endless cycle, wild side...
and all those fine 60's warhorses co-opted into commercial association-is nothing sacred?
when I listen to "moses, moses" by Prince Far-I... I just want to send all the food I can to starving babies, seen?
I'll keep fighting the good fight,in my own little way,musically...a sad world in which artists rather than politicians carry the torch of freedom and justice...?

even here in the US of Ayyyy John Peel's reverberations were felt,so many great bands came up with his support it's astounding.I love it when I find the occasional live gem in the bargain bins.He was a tireless supporter of underdogs and I'm often amazed he got away with playing such loud n' furious stuff. Mink Deville! great album, with bittersweet memories attatched for me,courtesy of a craaazy ex.
actually I'm grateful musique forms emotional attatchments in my mental rolodex~c'est la vie...la Vie en Rose...pity I lost my virginity to a particularly weak Grateful Dead album,well... it was a fine idea at the time.
yes,happysailor-just one Pepsi!!! yaaaargh!

This is the bittersweet wonder of music, isn't it? There are loads of tunes that bring good and bad memories. I've written more than once 'Alive' - Pearl Jam and 'Thank you for hearing me' - Sinead O connor playing in my dream the night my mum died. 'Young hearts' by Candi Staton and 'Spanish Stroll' - Mink Deville reminds me of a family holiday in the Lake District, 'Farewell My Summer Love' reminds me of an unrequited love. Actually, Prince Far I reminds me of listening to John Peel during the 1980's, my musical mentor!

When I can find time, I'm going to write about John Peel. What a colossus, what a hero! I went to his memorial at Bury St Edmunds cathedral in 2004, and I was in floods of tears for most of it. He was, indeed, the heartbeat of the indie scene of the 80's and, dub, I was pleased to read your account of Peel's influence in the US. I cannot speak too highly of him. La vie on rose, love that song, from Dietrich to Grace Jones:) Eve, I remember my Brother-in-law playing my The White Album just after he wed my sister in 1973, so it holds memories for me too:)

"Moses,Moses?"glad you asked. yes,a true heartbreaker from the great Far-I aka:the voice of thunder..."the night were dark and lonely, the wind were whistling wild, the widow had no food to claim for her crying child-she did not have one penny to buy a slice of bread, and she had sold her wedding gift to keep the young one fed..." it goes on,you can find it on the Virgin frontline comp. if you seek it-just a small example of a song which hits me in mi gut.

I love The White Album and listen to it on my iphone when I go for solitary walks. The feelings are bittersweet. It brings up the feelings of adolescence longing and nostalgia, but it really wasn't a great time in my life. But I think I like listening to it because music offered refuge.

the songs of our youth can bring back so many memories ... Lou Reed and the VU are among my faves, plus John Cale. Also love John Martyn if I'm feeling really sentimental and Van the Man of course ... so much music ...

Ah mizz ... John Peel ... he was so central to my life back in the 1980s ... he was the heartbeat of the indie scene in the UK - sorely missed
