Give me a cover song that is better than the original

Nimbus · M
Brilliant:

@Nimbus This is really good
@Nimbus Mighty fine guitar work on this version; the vocals owe a lot to Eric Burdon. It's tough to figure out what the original version was though: Joan Baez released a version in 1960 (she was 19); Dylan released a recording of it in 1961, but he apparently stole Dave Van Ronk's arrangement, and Van Ronk released his own recording soon after Dylan.

Wikipedia sez
The oldest known recording of the song, under the title "Rising Sun Blues", is by Appalachian artists Clarence "Tom" Ashley and Gwen Foster, who recorded it on September 6, 1933, on the Vocalion label (02576).
@ElwoodBlues Good find 👍
Tina Turner - Proud Mary

BTW, did you know that R•E•S•P•E•C•T was written by and originally performed by Otis Redding?
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
@ElwoodBlues I did. And Aretha's sis Carolyn came up with the "sock it to me" part at the end.
Jimi Hendrix’s cover of "All Along The Watchtower".
@bijouxbroussard Most people who cover Dylan though 😂

Both Sides Now - Judy Collins
Heard it through the Grapevine - Marvin Gaye
@originnone I had no idea I Heard it through the Grapevine wasn't a Gaye song. Great shout and great song
Unsure if it rivals, but this might compare to Stevie's original; definitely one of my favorites.

Anyone who is not disturbed by this version of the original Simon & Garfunkel song hasn't got a soul.

@Amylynne Agreed! I love that version!
Grateful Dead - Walk Me Out in the Morning Dew

@ElwoodBlues I dont know this song at all but will check it out
@Ozymandiaz Original was by a Canadian folksinger named Bonnie Dobson. If you want another more familiar Dead cover, check out their version of Buddy Holly's Not Fade Away. If you're in a hurry (the Dead are definitely NOT) the lyrics start around 4:45.

OK, here's a much shorter version with a somewhat different lineup:

Victoria was originally by the Kinks
Monument was originally by Depeche Mode
(and Stepping Stone was by the Monkees, of course)
@Ozymandiaz
Another one I forgot (for anyone who appreciates shoegaze, but Madonna not as much)
