I Have Something to Say and I Want to Be Heard

One of the smartest people I know is heading to Rome soon to be ordained as a priest. And you know he's never once tried to argue for the existence of God with any psuedoscientific nonsense or any other similar crap. Evolution is fact, most of the Bible is metaphor and parable, the big bang almost certainly happened, m-theory is awesome, etc...

He just says he wants to believe that things have a purpose. His faith that he'll see his loved ones again one day has gotten him through some hard times. And you know what? I respect that.

Evolution is fact?

Isn't it called the Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection, which was formulated by Charles Darwin?

@MalteseFalconPunch: He has a point. Scientists don't deal in facts. They deal in hypotheses and theories that best explain the world as they see it. I can't name one scientist who would claim something as a fact.

@MalteseFalconPunch: I think you might be making assumptions about my views. :P I'm simply saying that scientists don't ever claim something as a fact. It's not part of the scientific method and for very good reason.

@MalteseFalconPunch:

From Sean Carroll:

"And “facts”? Eavesdrop on some scientists at work. You will go years without hearing any of them talk about “facts.” They’ll talk about data, and measurements, and observations, and experiments — those are things with identifiable meanings that we can work with. But call something a “fact” and you’re making some absolute metaphysical claim that isn’t the kind of thing scientists like to do. Likewise “proof.” Mathematicians and logicians, who deal with abstract symbols independent of any connection to nature, prove things. Scientists don’t. They figure out that certain beliefs should be held with greater and greater confidence, but proving something is simply outside the domain of science."

That's what I mean.

@MalteseFalconPunch: It wasn't intended to be provocative. I've spent a lot of time in the past discussing such topics and I know how important it is to speak carefully so as to avoid as much miscommunication as is possible and stave off unnecessary debates.

The idea of theories versus facts merely grabbed my attention and interest, so I threw my two cents in. Either way, sorry for bothering you.
