placebo..nocebo..what is the difference ?

A nocebo is a detrimental effect on health produced by psychological or psychosomatic factors such as negative expectations of treatment or prognosis.

A placebo can be
1. a medicine or procedure prescribed for the psychological benefit to the patient rather than for any physiological effect,
2. a substance that has no therapeutic effect, used as a control in testing new drugs,
or
3. a measure designed merely to humour or placate someone.
@revenant It might be successful for a while, but eventually you'd be taken to court for fraud and you'd lose the case.

There is absolute evidence that we need zero added sugar in our diets in order to stay healthy.
Chocolate has a perfect mix of 50% sugar with 50% saturated fat, which induces cravings for more, which leads to overweight and all the health problems that go with it.

Despite the fact that placebo and nocebo effects are real, neither will stop a poison or addictive substances from doing their damage.

A 33% chance of doing something good due to a belief, cannot outweigh a 100% certainty of that same something doing harm due to its physical effects on our systems.

If in doubt, check the experiments on obesity in rats. There's also plenty of research on human diet - see Dr Michael Mosley's books. He collates all the latest proofs.

@hartfire I will change my name to Dr Oz then
@revenant ha ha!
Both are basically "mind over matter."

A placebo is for example when you are given a sugar pill and you start to feel better because you believe it is having an impact.

Nocebo is when someone has convinced themselves something will cause harm to them and their mind creates the negative symptoms they are convinced will happen.

Good example of this is the so called "covid vaccine shakes" you see on the internet these days.

People have convinced themselves in advance it will harm them so not surprisingly their body starts having stress induced negative symptoms.
@revenant The thing is this involves alot of different functions of the brain and no one area.

I mean the end reaction is subconscious an involuntary but you get to that point from other things before you get there.

A good way to avoid the nocebo effect is to avoid stuff like self diagnosing on WebMD like a hypochondriac, don't go looking for medical horror stories online, avoid conspiracy theories. The end result for these people is an involuntary stress response but they preconditioned themselves to react that way.

Hope that makes sense.

@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow What do I do when conspiracy theories have a placebo effect on me ?
@revenant Both are temporary effects. So deconstructing things logically and looking back with a clear mind helps with that.
Placebo is defined as an inert substance that provokes perceived benefits, whereas the term nocebo is used when an inert substance causes perceived harm.

If the wrist band I am wearing brings positive results, then its placebo else it's nocebo

Positive and negative effects

@icedsky i need more explanations 🙂

@revenant a nocebo will be detrimental to someone that is expecting a positive effect. Like taking a pain killer and getting more pain. A love talisman that brings feelings of hate. A negative effect when looking for a positive effect.

@icedsky That is no good at all then.

if the end result is the same then there is no difference.
