As if the few huge US corporations and their commercial clients don't already do all that anyway.

At least the EU does say why: crime detection, and that is perfectly understandable.

To be honest, whilst I find the EU proposal deeply worrying, I fear the Internet service companies, advertising-agencies and data-resellers much more than government or law agencies.

The biggest danger though is probably from hackers.

Time to go back back in time to the 1800s where there was privacy.

But did you know in the countries of the seven eyes (look it up) the VPN services turn over records to the government anyways. Without customers knowledge or consent
@HumanEarth just one larger solar storm. It's all it takes

Done. See https://ec.europa.eu/info/law/better-regulation/have-your-say/initiatives/14680-Impact-assessment-on-retention-of-data-by-service-providers-for-criminal-proceedings-/F3566090_en

I doubt that it will have any impact.
Everyday: news of hacked institutions and or potential digital attacks on infrastructure..

Our fearless leaders: we need to digitalise everything into one central database …. 🤔

Yet another reason for not being in the EU.
@Nimbus The UK government will introduce it anyway, they just won't be able to blame the EU quite so easily. Most likely they'll claim they have to implement it in order to trade with EU countries.

The new iron curtain. Why is that government so paranoid?
