In mid conversation, why do people say " are you an only child"?

It's weird to me when that comes up mid sentence.
What are they trying to imply?

That I'm not "cool" enough or something

Do you give off an aura of being spoiled and entitled? I can't imagine it, but it was the first thing that came to mind.
iamnikki · 31-35, F
@DunningKruger nope. I've worked since I was 16. Nobody buys me anything, and I mean nothing at all
DunningKruger · 61-69, M
@iamnikki You mean a great deal.

That hasn't happened to me, and I was an only. However, back in the 60s and 70s when I was a kid, I definitely got the feeling that being an only was uncool. Mum was furious because people said she had to adopt if she couldn't have more kids of her own. Otherwise, they said, there was a danger that I'd turn out to be a problem kid in some way.

I suppose I proved them all wrong, since I did well in school, never did drugs or got into any trouble. Other kids accepted the fact that I didn't have siblings. It was just the older folks that looked at me suspiciously until they got to know me.

Maybe something that was said during the conversation that gave that impression

I am an only child: don't think anybody has ever asked me that.
Generally, only kids lack the sharing traits and hence, get to hear such, often.

@Lyfis2live Maybe some do. I was an only who shared everything with my friends and parents as a kid, inclluding info... Maybe shared too much, in fact. I tended to get taken advantage of. Kids with siblings learn to defend their territory.
iamnikki · 31-35, F
@Lyfis2live the comment wasn't about sharing anything
@iamnikki Yet it is the essential that, once observed missing by those people, make them say what your post mentions.

Just want to know if your parents have any children who survived past the birth canal
