Some words on empathy and Trump’s war.

Isn’t it remarkable how quickly empathy gets rationed.

The same people who once laughed at videos of drowning refugees, who dismissed desperate families crossing seas as consequences of their choices are now incandescent when someone points out that those trapped in Dubai by the forces Trump has unleashed are not fundamentally different.

Suddenly, being stranded by forces beyond your control is a tragedy. Suddenly, human vulnerability deserves compassion.

But fear feels the same in every language and every country. A person clinging to survival, whether in the Mediterranean or in a bombed high rise, is still just a human being trying not to die.

When refugees fled war, famine, or collapse, many on the far right were happy to say things like “They chose to go.” “They shouldn’t have been there.” “Not our problem.” Yet when disaster strikes a wealthy city filled with tourists, influencers, and expatriates, the tone shifts overnight. Now it’s shock. Now it’s horror. Now it’s outrage at anyone who dares to minimise suffering.

So will we tell them to stay in their chosen place of residence as they are of “fighting age?”

This is nothing more than selective empathy.

If it’s cruel to mock people stranded in a modern metropolis, it was cruel to mock people drowning at sea. If we agree that no one deserves to die because of circumstances spiraling beyond their control, that principle can’t be applied only when the victims look familiar, prosperous, or socially desirable.

Or White.

Compassion isn’t supposed to be for those who look like us. You don’t have to erase context to acknowledge humanity. You don’t have to agree with every migration policy to recognise that drowning is terrifying. War is terrifying. And you don’t have to downplay one crisis to take another seriously.

The real test of moral consistency is whether we can extend the same basic dignity to those we’ve been taught to see as Others, not just to those who look like us.

Empathy that only flows in one direction isn’t empathy at all. Can we please have compassion for everyone who is suffering.

What do you mean calling it Trump's war. Fake altruists such as yourself sicken me. Empathic people don't start off assigning blame saying things like "forces Trump has unleashed." Oh I'm sorry, did Trump make the Iranians start attacking rather than surrender. That's what they chose to do. The blood from their ballistics is on them.
@Jackaloftheazuresand Meanwhile, in Zelenskyy's war ... 🙄

Empathy that only applies to people who look like us isn’t empathy. It’s preference.
America's war. Empathy begins with taking responsibility for yourself. USA wars. Bipartisan, normal wars. Every day wars.
@Diotrephes Oh, really, is that right? We defeated Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy and fascist, Imperial Japan in WWII, in the process liberating over a 100 million people in France, Italy, N Africa, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Holland, Denmark, countless Pacific Islands, the Phillipines, etc., etc.! We spent billions of our tax money under the Marshall Plan to rebuild Europe. We helped rebuild Japan, Korea and many other nations, big and small. Boy, that really sounds like bullying, doesn’t it!? Here’s a plan for you: get drunk or drugged up and try your best to erase the Leftist BS indoctrination you apparently suffered through in HS and college !

It's unfortunate that you are so ignorant about American history.

The only reason tRump started this war was to distract from Epstein.

So when the novelty of this war is finished, those good ol Epstein files will still be waiting.

Tell that to these innocent dead Iranians murdered by their leaders.

@Thorstormbringer If Iran had missile technology, they would have used it long ago.

If they didn’t choose to not cooperate and follow ice instructions and obstruct ice operations and threaten ice they would be alive today.

@Waveney = Have you noticed that the Zionists always destroy schools and hospitals as their initial primary targets?

@gregloa Yes I remember Korea, Vietnam, Libya, Syria and Iraq. They all ended very well didn't they? Each one of those countries (except S Korea) is now a paragon of democracy with happy laughing, free citizens, all thanks to America...

Iran will go the same way. You don't think the regime won't have had a plan for if the Ayatollah was taken out? You think Iran is going to transform into a beacon of liberal democracy, and then get down on its knees to its mortal enemies and THANK them? Not even JD Vance will be able to persuade them to do that.

Nope, the regime will simply replace the Ayatollah with an even more hardline Supreme Leader who will ensure continued brutal suppression of the Iranian people and many thousands more will die. (But they're only Iranians, so...)

The one thing that won't happen is that Iran will threaten the US and Israel. It never could threaten the US and Israel. All it did was hurl insults. Sorry that Trump can't handle insults, but we knew that anyway.

Here's the uncomfortable truth: Iran has now killed more Americans since Trump went to war three days ago than it had in 5 decades. But Trump has already said he doesn't actually care.

Trouble is, for him, ordinary Americans DO care. He is done for in the mid-terms, and he will be impeached and this time convicted before his term is out.
