For brown and black folks here..

If you are watching say a movie with ensemble cast .. whom do you associate with more deeply? Do you associate more with the white cast or with the PoC cast ?
I ask this keeping two things in mind
1) Both of them have layers . They have stories that resonate with your lives . Guilt grief joy all of it .
2) Keep a non judgemental and kind perspective.

Today as I was watching The series BEAR .. i realised how much I was unconsciously resonating with the white cast more than the black cast .. like skipping the black people story plots .. but as I stopped and dived deeper I realised I am very much like Sydney.. a bold little impatient yet decisive young black girl.

I'm a black woman.I instinctively ruit for black and brown charcters. I don’t skip white storylines because the majority of the American media I consumed growing up consisted of an all white cast. I enjoy stories,not race or gender.

@PinkMoon I hear you...I think most of us enjoy stories..but have you heard of the word internalised male gaze? .. sometimes I think there is a white gaze inside my mind looking at things from a biased white perspective

@LetsTry It's natural to have a biased white perspective, I just admitted to having the same thing. Having an awareness of that bias helps us improve because our awareness of the bias helps us to push ourselves to be more open to different perspectives. People who aren't aware of their biases can't grow beyond them. This is a great post because it shows you are concerned about other people and you're asking questions that help you understand POC better. You're on the right path.

@PinkMoon 🙏🏽 thanks... I feel that too.. I wish I didn't have that gaze you know.. but I have realised more i fight it more it controls me . So I have let it exist. I can't control my unconscious. What I can do is make conscious choices . Choosing to watch Black and Brown stories, feminist stories... I must say mainstream doesn't have those in abundance.
