What should define us?

We are having a debate in the office as to whether race or culture should be the primary defining characteristic for people. I believe that culture has more to do with it, as the majority of people on the planet are of “beige” colouration and the word “Black” is a misnomer defined by a Latin term, “negro” which someone in antiquity used to describe African and some South American and Micronesian peoples, erroneously.

The term, "Defining" starts off with extreme limitations. Race is a more a social construct...not biological. It is closest to phenotype.

The goal of the "definition" will help answer the topic question. To what end? ... Descriptive of their appearance? Their behavior? Their core values? Their psychology?

Is it a group definition for categorizing? To what purpose?

Etc. etc

It feels like an attempt at simplified reductionism.... Dangerous due to lack of accounting for variation and the tendency to stereotype.
