Housing should be a human right

Public housing in form of large panel system-buildings would be a good way to combat homelessness and the housing crisis.

The problem is that if you just give people something, they won't take care of it.
I mean look at how people conduct themselves in the projects and basically destroy the places.

They figure they do not own it so why take care of it?
@CestManan that's insane. Wherever capitalism touched housing people are poorer and sicker and there is homelessness.
CestManan · 46-50, F
@Roundandroundwego I know some homeless people would take care of their accommodations best they could but some would just ruin it for the rest.
@CestManan housing is so expensive that anyone could end up homeless at some point. Privatization guaranteed it. People who work and live inside that free market system definitely need rehabilitation. Their cars and suburbs are killing us and their irresponsible attitude towards public matters is extreme. We don't sit around talking about putting you all on buses to Tijuana without papers - homeless people don't think that's funny.

@Roundandroundwego it is true that any one of us could end up homeless at any time.
I think it would be great if they could use old or abandoned places for at least a shelter for homeless. Like I said though, some people would ruin it. Just like how some people living in the projects eventually ruin the neighborhood.

I imagine where that comes from is because in some cities (mine included) there are too many panhandlers in the streets. They are a dime a dozen and a nuisance.

@CestManan Those who ruin it often struggle with other problems making it difficult for them to take care of themselves or their accommodations

The problem with public housing in the US is that it is segregated and stigmatized leading to the creation of ghetto like structures while in other countries public and private housing are mixed together.

@Gloomy I am not rich, had it not been for my family's generosity, I could have been homeless by now myself. Though my neighborhood is not the ghetto but it is older and run down looking.

It's like this - people who think something is a good idea, like free housing, are often the same people who do not have to deal with the problems that follow.

For segregated housing - people that live in decent areas payed a lot of money to be there. They do not want to live next to the ghetto where their homes and families would be at greater risk for violence, break-ins, etc.

Actually sensible measures would eradicate problems like I said the stigma and segregation even lead to these issues. Other countries who have mixed housing and don't exclude people based on wealth and income have stronger social cohesion.
Like gated community are disgusting.

@Gloomy I think the reason you idealize living around lower class and criminals might be because you are turned on by "Bad boys". You think they can do no wrong.

We tend to make excuses for those who we have romantic interest. Kind of like how some old perv judge would go easier on a young pretty female than he would some thug male.

If someone has money though, they likely just do not want to live in crime-ridden slums.

@CestManan No because I grew up in a neighbourhood quite similar to a ghetto in poverty. I'm Romani and I beg you to stop using "chavs" and I have been around "lower class" people some of whom have broken the law but mostly just people who do their best to get by. I still live in a neighbourhood like that and am sick and tired of snobs talking down and just simply being ignorant. People sometimes accuse me of being a criminal simply because i'm "gypsy" so quit assuming stuff.

Why the fuck do you think it's cause I have a crush on someone or some shit?
CestManan · 46-50, F
@Gloomy I am in the USA and do not regularly say "chavs" so do not worry about that.

Usually when we have a crush on certain people we think they can do no wrong.
I do not imagine you yourself are a "bad guy".
Gloomy · F
@CestManan I'm not even defending crime in general I am saying the segregation, stigma and overall societal situation furthers crime not public housing initiatives.

By fostering classism the problem won't go away.
