Is affordable housing a basic human right or is housing only for those at the top of the tier?

Feeling really discouraged tonight
plungesponge · 41-45, M
I don't believe for a second humanity can almost provide a smartphone for everyone on the planet, but can't arrange a few walls and a roof. I think the only reason housing is "scarce" is because that props up a Ponzi scheme housing racket
SW-User
@plungesponge agree and all these investors buying up all the homes are racking up the market rate for housing
plungesponge · 41-45, M
@SW-User yep, and they may even force the next generation to bankrupt themselves entirely for a house. But I hope instead it becomes so obviously risky even the banks have to stop inflating this bubble and we see houses fall back to what they are actually worth
Gusman · 61-69, M
I believe housing is a right for everyone.
There is so much wrong with the system that allows "The Haves" to buy up properties for profit.
Thus pushing prices out of reach of a huge percentage of society.
The system is broken when it allows people to be made homeless because landlords want to increase their profits by raising rents.
If the tenant can not afford it then they become homeless with no redress.
My landlord owns 124 units plus 25 houses.
Just with my block of 30 units he rakes in $330,000 a year. He raised everyone's rent by 8%.
How can it be justified?
Surely he is making a ton of profit but it is not enough?
The more they have, the more they want.
SW-User
@Gusman its never enough for these people

It SHOULD be a basic human right

Heh. I was just looking into mortgages and stuff. Apparently I can't afford what I want. I either gotta settle for a dump or magically triple my income.

@Nadie I know I feel the same. I used to be able to support myself but now I am genuinely not sure what I am going to do. I feel in a serious bind
@SW-User I hope you catch a break soon.
SW-User
@Nadie same with you

Affordable housing in an area of practicality may not be attainable. Affordable housing is for example available in Idaho, Iowa, Florida,

Perhaps not in Honolulu, Manhattan,Beverley Hills.

I don’t believe anyone has an intrinsic right to live where they cannot afford to pay for housing.
SW-User
@Muthafukajones the problem is the jobs are in the cities and you can't afford to live anywhere without a job
rosyhills · 31-35, F
Yea I'm slightly getting nervous. Everything is going up, and pay really isn't. And I'm a single person so no one to split costs with😬
rosyhills · 31-35, F
@SW-User are you the one that has been trying to get an apartment for a while?
Start searching for a new job in your same/similar field asap. Ask friends/family for recommendations?
SW-User
@rosyhills my whole industry is in trouble right now
rosyhills · 31-35, F
@SW-User what industy do you work in?
justanothername · 51-55, M
It should be a basic human right but for the last few years and moving forward housing affordability is not realistic for regular income earners in many countries around the world.
SW-User
@justanothername I just dont even know what to do anymore its gotten so bad
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
That depends on the kind of government you vote in.. There is enough wealth out there for everyone to have a decent home, decent health care and decent education.😷
deadgerbil · 26-30
It should be a human right but there's always an excuse as to why society can't provide for others
It should be a basic human right. Unfortunately profit trumps human rights.
May I pray for you?
SW-User
@JustGoneNow yes thank you 🤗
@SW-User 🖤🤗
