Military check points and papers please, or human rights and open borders??

Would you pick a side if we could vote?
Which one?
SlaveEt · 36-40, F
Controlled federal borders, open borders between states. A country without federal borders is no country.

@SlaveEt I wish the wokesters would colonize the sun
Slade · 56-60, M
@Roundandroundwego their rights end at the tip of my gun
@Slade disarming sounds imperative.

Human rights and open borders…
Freedom.
specman · 51-55, M
We should require applications to stay in the US.
justanothername · 51-55, M
@specman You do already and have done for many years. They are called temporary work visas which you need if you are not a tourist. Even a standard tourist visa has a finite time line.
justanothername · 51-55, M
@specman Clearly you have never travelled outside of the US otherwise you would know this. There is a standard arrivals card that every passenger on every vessel must fill out before entering the US (unless you are traveling as part of the US Military)
specman · 51-55, M
@justanothername for anyone that is not a US citizen they must have filed an application and should not be allowed to stay in the US until their application is approved.

We already have checkpoints - that's not the problem, and open borders or walls aren't solutions either.
@Ontheroad what are the solutions?
Ontheroad · M
@Roundandroundwego I certainly don't know them all, but first and foremost a complete revamping of immigration laws if and when Congress can get around to doing something besides trying to tear down the other side. Secondly, by recognizing the people trying to come across our borders are but part of the undocumented immigration problem. To stop politicising the problem and understanding peopel aren't leaving their homes because they want to, that it's for 99% of them their only chance for a decent, or any life at all. Then we need to get busy working with these countries to establish fair immigration policies and to help them overcome their internal problems that cause these people from having to flee and try to find refuge here.
Abstraction · 61-69, M
It's a completely false dichotomy.
@Abstraction workers of the world unite!

@Roundandroundwego I agree with that. I don't agree with completely open borders, no papers, anybody can enter my country as they choose. I do believe in Imagine by John Lennon but we aren't there yet.
Err.. open borders and human rights should not be muddy watered..

You should at least know and deny entry to criminals and sex/drug traffickers yes?
Crazywaterspring · 61-69, M
Ever been to south Texas? Plenty of checkpoints there. Those are legal within 100 miles from the border.
@Crazywaterspring defacto not legal.

Can't we just have common sense
@SW-User no, that's not how adults make democracy and freedom common. But thanks for confirming! America refuses to do civility and runs away from it every time.
