I Hate Gender Roles And Stereotypes

I really struggle with this one and I have all of my life. I never quite fit the assigned role for me growing up. I've listened many times the positive messages of "you do you" but can still hear the echoes of less obvious cues that tell a very different message. I'm reminded again and again that terms like "quirky" and "different" aren't messages of acceptance. They hold hidden agendas behind them to let me know I do not fit what is expected. I like these things about myself, but deep inside I know I would be happier if I were just "normal".

Know what stereotype I can't stand that people have constantly assumed about me my whole life? That just because I am a guy, because I have a penis and set of balls that I automatically am into sports. I don't give a shit about sports. They bore me.

@IWasCallingYaLarry I wonder if that's more of a challenge than being a non typical female. I see a lot of posturing by both sexes, but in different ways.

@Wendy33 yeah both have annoyign stereotypes. Like someone will ask me if I saw the game last night, and I say "Nope. I don't watch sports." and I even know women who say they would also assume their guy is into sports and I'm like "That's like assuming all women love shopping or cooking."

@IWasCallingYaLarry Sports themselves is an interesting expectation. For men, you have to love sports or you're strange. For women, you don't have to like sports, but if you do you're welcomed into the club...just don't win too often against the boys.

@Wendy33 I am into video games, anime, manga, comics, pretty much anything considered nerdy. I am into that stuff instead of sports.
