Cognitive Dissonance.

People will make you the villain in their story, when their identity and the truth of the reality are not matching up.

This is to protect their identity and guilt of their behaviour towards you.

Their brains will run the story that causes them the least guilt.

It’s worse when they actually believe their own reality. They have no self awareness at that point.

@QuietReverie for some I imagine it’s a defense mechanism because deep down they know they’re a fraud.

For others, I’m sure they’ve been enabled.
