Are humans allowed to live wild in the USA and Canada's?

I just saw a documentary on wild horses and I was wondering if humans are allowed to live in wild without government interference

In the USA Slab City in California is the closest thing to that idea.

@robertsnj Heard a few years ago that they were going to clean it up and close the area down but they haven’t done it yet. There is a whole different sub-culture there.

@cherokeepatti I couldn't do it. Hats off to those residents though

@robertsnj I watched a video of a retired lady who takes her van down there and lives in it during the winter. She goes back to the north in the warmer months. Doesn’t have to pay rent and utilities and can live on her retirement that way. But it would suck to have to go fetch water on a regular basis.

@cherokeepatti I wonder if she looked at apartments and or mobile homes and places with low taxes, low cost of living if she could do just as well. I think a lot of people who have left the job market punish themselves by living in high cost of living areas

@robertsnj I think she did. She didn’t need that much in material possessions and travels light. Anything rented here is very expensive. Takes time to get help with rental assistance.

@cherokeepatti is slab city or something like it appeal to you?

@robertsnj not really. It is interesting to watch the videos about it. People are pretty laid-back there but there are things that go on there I don’t want to be around. I watched one video about it. Someone commented that they’d visited and came home with an STD due to paying someone for sex. There was a guy making pets out of rattlesnakes he caught there and handling them. That weirded me out. I don’t want to live anywhere in a desert area with rattlesnakes. And no running water although I think there’s a well or spring where random people dip into it and bathe….which is a yuck factor. Imagine living there and having car trouble when you get in to go somewhere to get groceries and water, not a good thing. Or have a medical problem and need to get checked really quick.

@cherokeepatti i feel the same way about it / not doable for me but I respect people who give that a shot

@robertsnj for those on a strict budget it may be one way to survive. Some people worked hard to create a free library there from books that were discarded after people moved and left boxes of belongings behind. That kind of thing probably helps it to be more livable for them considering that the only entertainment there is what the residents provide.
