I really do believe that it's a preemptive strike born of the fear that someone might actually BE better (nicer, more popular, admired, etc) than they are.
Combine that being TAUGHT that violence against someone lesser than you has a place in this world. Popular "entertainment" and media, including video games, etc.
And in this I include the sports mentality, boxing, hockey, what have you, and the ravenous need to identify with a certain Team (or "clan"?) as something "better" than another (Soccer fans, anyone? Football coaches exhorting their players to "Get out there and tear-em up!"?). This is all seen as normal and desirable behavior in our society. "...Makes-em MEN!"
How, then, do we turn around and say to a young boy, NO, that's NOT acceptable? Just because you feel lesser inside you cannot pummel the kid next to you?
What bully would buy that, when proof to the contrary is all around him??
