What happened to 'cultural appropriation'?

Can I now wear a kimono and a sombrero without being put on the naughty step?

Someone realized that every culture appropriates from other cultures and that it's a sign of a living, healthy growing culture that it is willing to change and adapt and adopt?
@ChipmunkErnie Yeah, but it hits a little differently when the people using aspects of your culture have traditionally forbidden you from using it.

@bijouxbroussard or when some try to gaslight people about Vikings inventing braids, considering braided hairstyles are documented in African cultures thousands of years before the Viking Age.

@AwesomusPrime Or that black slaves invented bluejeans?
@ChipmunkErnie
The process of creating blue jeans is rooted in the skills of enslaved Africans who knew how to process the indigo plant for dyeing fabric. They played a crucial role in the development of denim, which was later popularized in America.

@ChipmunkErnie Even if you disagree, I’m not sure how that counts as cultural appropriation. Jeans started as practical workwear and only picked up cultural meaning later on and adopted by people of all backgrounds. Jeans have never had a racial connotation.

@ChipmunkErnie What I posted didn’t say they "invented" blue jeans, so I’m not arguing the point. Nothing to "debunk". But there are inventions for which enslaved people never received credit, because their owners filed the patent.

@bijouxbroussard Kind of like all the white researchers who worked for Edison and never got credit. Everybody gets ripped off.
@ChipmunkErnie Right…Edison ripped them off because they were free and white. Exactly the same circumstances.

@bijouxbroussard Whatever.

@bijouxbroussard What some seem to miss is that these contributions need to be stated and acknowledged because of the gaslighting that only a certain group of people are capable of certain things.
