Hope and suffering

In the Bible it is said that suffering produces perseverance and perseverance character and character hope. It's new to me how character produces hope,so it seems hope does not come out of nowhere but springs out of suffering and so that's the secret .This character the Bible is talking must be something build on the confidence in God and I can imagine humility , courage and faith and a hope that will endure even when they wane away.
