They are perfect for creating your own discounts. What these big supermarket chains don't realise is that self serve checkouts are a lose lose situation. We call it "swiping" where we skip scanning some items lol.
@AwakeningConfession9: The computer has a weight for each item. If something extra is put in the bag it should catch it.

@AcidBurn: not at Coles or Safeway, cost too much for them. At Kmart or Target where they sell expensive stuff like clothes, toys or household items, they have scales.

@AcidBurn: the grocery store ones don't have scales, where as the department stores do. Does that explain it better?
@AwakeningConfession9: Every grocery store I've ever been in that has self checkouts has scales in the bagging area.
