What do you think of self serve cashier?

I went to a store couple of days ago and there weren't any cashiers! Everything was self serve! People need jobs, hurray for technology but employment is essential for the nation?

I think if you 49 or older it is best that you are warned before using them something like this: Dear valued shopper if you were born on or before 1967 please step away from the machine and use the traditional teller lines as you will only embarrass yourselves...

I've never used them. They seem like a great way to let merchandise walk out the door.

Yeah employment is essential... but profit is the bottom line for business.
@iMystery: I don't think the profit is there. If it is it's only because people aren't properly abusing the system.

@iMystery: The store I went to was has a very big name! I'm sure they make alot of money!
@SaintAdelaide: The huge chains are the only ones that can incur the losses they bring.
I don't mind them if I just have a few items; however, I agree that people need jobs. Often there will be two self-serve lines open and only one cashier, with 20 people in the line. This happens a lot at my local grocer. They have 12 cashier lines, but often there's no more than two open, with way too many people in line. If it's right before a snowstorm or holiday, they may have at least half of the cashier lines open, but I've never seen ALL of the cashier lines staffed.
@DreamyCrush: I never understood self checkouts at grocery stores. I'd get organic everything and use the plu for the cheap version lol

I hate them. They always seem to go wrong for me and I never end up paying the correct amount.

They are perfect for creating your own discounts. What these big supermarket chains don't realise is that self serve checkouts are a lose lose situation. We call it "swiping" where we skip scanning some items lol.
@AwakeningConfession9: That makes absolutely no sense.

@AcidBurn: the grocery store ones don't have scales, where as the department stores do. Does that explain it better?
@AwakeningConfession9: Every grocery store I've ever been in that has self checkouts has scales in the bagging area.
Yes. I use them to steal veggies & garlic. Very convenient

They're handy if you're only buying a few things.

Please see my post re: artificial intelligence... we are heading down a one way street and it scares me.

Once robots take over. People will be paid without jobs. Let the full plan be implemented. Nobody wants those jobs anyways.

@lockedupforgood: i thought that six months ago, but the more i read the less confident i get. I don't have some big paranoia but it is a concern and it seems to be an unregulated and misunderstood space

@Raymuundo: We are definitely advancing at a pace that we don't have control over. We have a mindset of 19th century and living in 21st

@lockedupforgood: agreed. The world is changing rapidly. Apple and Google are worth way over US$1 trillion combined. I find this scary. Throw in Alibaba and you are almost at US$1.5T.
