In 1776, most European countries (that's where I live) were still characterised by serfdom ("bonded labor"), which was quite similar to slavery. I think this is not what July the 4th stands for. Instead, it stands for America as a free republic, free citizens, no matter whether they are black, white, or maybe blue.
