"i'm sick...i can't come into work"....
.....from one of my warehouse guys who called in sick mid week for one day. who gets sick for one day and returns the next day looking just fine? he doesn't drink so he wasn't hung over and it wasn't food poisoning. if one says "look, i'm having a bit of a personal problem and i need a day off" then i'm totally ok with that. i get that females might be genuinely ill for a day but not males.

@beermeplease if I were you and you were his boss I would have given him a stern warning

@Moneyonmymind he's been a long time employee and actually a good worker. the next day i kinda joshed with him and said bs you weren't sick. we left it at that. it's a casual place to work with a lot of leniency as it is very difficult to find workers to do the kind of work we do...especially the younger ones.

@Moneyonmymind thanks for bc

@beermeplease yes but even with that he is a man and knows better, that also sets a bad example for the rest of the gang

@Moneyonmymind true...but the rest of the gang are all long term workers as well. it's not a very large company. if any one of those guys decides to leave it makes it really difficult to replace them. for the most part they are there pretty well every day and work hard...and they are not young and the work can be quite physical. lately when we've hired younger workers they end up quitting or dismissed within a month. so i am totally ok if they need a day off. they don't need to say they are sick.

@beermeplease I had a guy last year call in fake sick with COVID when he was having some mental health problems. I'd have respected him more if he had just been honest.
