What's with some old time sayings that make no sense?

"You can't have your cake and eat it, too". Who has ever wanted to keep a cake without eating it or sharing it with others? What good is old cake?

That's what I think. What's the point of having a cake if you can't eat it. It's a terribly thought out saying! It should be something like you can't have cake and pie for desert at the same time or something.
