I know exactly what a catfish is since a couple of people have tried it on me. Maybe it's you who doesn't know what is a catfish? A catfish is a person or persons pretending to be someone else gradually pulling an innocent person or persons into a scam. A scam isn't always money, although most times they are, but they can be doing it for a relationship. Anyways someone gets hurt and sometimes the situation can become dangerous.

@ChocolateSauce: not quite. so what u are pointing to is called a Nigerian scam. basically, money is the object for those people, and that's what u are pointing at. catfish is more about an online connection. when u pull the parameters back to the point where someone is pretending to be someone they aren't... well we are all catfish in real life then.... there doesn't have to be a scam for someone to be a catfish. many people get involved with these people not for a scam purpose, but just because they are lonely. yea.. they are both deceptive... but it doesn't mean they are the same thing

again... ur parameters there would include everyone everywhere. i know this isn't an emotional or romantic relationship we are forming at the moment, but its a relationship. so by those means.. i would be a catfish. it has to be something more defined then that.

you would be a catfish too.. we don't tell people about our bad parts, and we don't let ourselves out completely online. That is why we use an anonymous site. the purpose of what they are going for is completely relevant for the term. catfish applies to romantic relationships.
