did you hear that Cleopatra was black

yep that is right, Netflix confirmed it as did the writers of the series. So it must be true.

Just ignore the lawsuit happing against Netflix by some Egyptians for trying to erase their history.
Surely it wouldnt be Hollywood trying to rewrite history to put black people at the center of everything instead of just making compelling shows on Black history that does not include slavery
Race swapping is just far easier

When people talk about Cleopatra, they generally mean Cleopatra VII. It's important to understand this because, in the Ptolemaic dynasty, all of the kings (pharaohs ?) were named Ptolemy and all of the queens were named either Cleopatra, Arsinoe or Berenice.

In terms of the racial appearance of Cleopatra VII, there is every likelihood that she would have looked very similar to Adele James, the actress portraying her in the new Netflix series. Maybe, given her (ie the actual Cleopatra VII) Hellenic ancestry, a slightly lighter skin tone. But, in my not so humble opinion, pretty accurate casting.

Quite frankly, this Egyptian "lawyer" is talking out of his rear end!

@room101 thank you cuz i started getting confused how cleopatra could be both egyptian and greek and black
Torsten · 36-40, M
@room101 she was Greek descent and said to have fair skin. She was not black. The casting is nonsense
room101 · 51-55, M
@MartinTheFirst Ever been to Egypt?
MartinTheFirst · 26-30, M
@room101 yeh!
@Torsten Was she also Muslim?
room101 · 51-55, M
@Torsten Said by whom? The Hollywood portrayal by Elizabeth Taylor?

Cleopatra VII was alive during the end of the Ptolemaic dynasty. By that point, approx 250 years had passed since the Ptolemy "family" had arrived in Egypt with Alexander the Great. More than enough time for her ethnic appearance to have changed.

And changed from what exactly? Macedonian Greeks are, and were, fairer in complexion than their southern counterparts. But, other than Alexander himself, is there anything in the historical record that suggests that they looked anything other than dark haired and what we now refer to as olive skinned?
room101 · 51-55, M
@MartinTheFirst And what did the locals look like to you? You did see local Egyptians, right?
MartinTheFirst · 26-30, M
@room101 I don't remember! But a simple google result will give you the answer to that question
MartinTheFirst · 26-30, M
@room101 they not black
room101 · 51-55, M
@MartinTheFirst Please point me to where I said that Egyptians are Black.

I've been to various parts of Egypt more times than I can remember off the top of my head. And I do remember what the locals that I met looked like ie I don't need Google.
MartinTheFirst · 26-30, M
@room101 well good for you budd
@room101 Racists are going to racist no matter what the facts indicate.

@room101 the fact she was Macedonian Greek says it. Go search up Macedonian Greek women and tell me if they look like the actress cast in that Netflix flop
@Torsten Greeks were considered non whites till after WW2. lol

And I guess you don't understand how skin pigment works or it's function.

Stories of Viking explorers describe meeting people that were "blue". Do you really think they met Smurf?

Subtle and less subtle changes in language can make older sources seem almost goofy and lose context.

And again "fair skinned" in the context of North Africa is a bit different than Norway.
Torsten · 36-40, M
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow cool now show me where i claimed she was white
@Torsten That is the entire point of your post. Going back to pretending you are not a white supremacist.

@Torsten It is also weird you assume modern Greeks look the same as they did in 30BC with zero evidence. 🤣

@Torsten Cleopatra VII was Macedonian Greek by descent. As I have already explained, approx 250 years had passed since her original blood-line had left Macedonia.

Oh and FYI, I'M GREEK. I think I've got a pretty good handle on what we look like now and what we probably looked like 2000+ years ago. I was born blonde and blue eyed, as were a number of my family members. By the time we migrated to the UK (when I was five years old) my hair had become the standard Greek brown colour and my eyes had turned a hazel brown with a few green flecks that seem to appear as and when they feel like showing up. My skin colour is lighter than the average Greek but I tan very easily.

It amazes me, but doesn't surprise me, how many SNOWflakes on this post have got their knickers in a twist because the media industry is no longer pandering to your racially driven insecurities.
Torsten · 36-40, M
@room101 so basically you say what I have been saying, yet are disputing it at the same time.
Netflix and Hollywood are pandering to the black race while spitting on them at the same time. They can not come up with anything original for them nor will portray their own history except when it comes to slavery and try to rewrite history.
Funny how i have been called and implied as being racist due to this thread yet what they are doing is what I would call actual racism and yet you all defend it and act like its not a big deal.
This thread might possibly be showing the real racists here and it seems to be the ones who love calling others racist here all the time.

"Zahi Hawass, a prominent Egyptologist and former antiquities minister, told the al-Masry al-Youm newspaper: "This is completely fake. Cleopatra was Greek, meaning that she was light-skinned, not black."

Mr Hawass said the only rulers of Egypt known to have been black were the Kushite kings of the 25th Dynasty (747-656 BC).

"Netflix is trying to provoke confusion by spreading false and deceptive facts that the origin of the Egyptian civilisation is black," he added and called on Egyptians to take a stand against the streaming giant."
room101 · 51-55, M
@Torsten Nice try at gaslighting. No, I'm not saying anything like what you are saying.

We have mountains of art, going back hundreds of years, depicting Biblical figures as being white Europeans. Fun fact, they were not. We also have countless movies and TV shows where white actors play everything from Japanese Geisha girls to fuck knows what else. Now, you've got your knickers in a twist because the producers of a TV show are trying to portray a historically famous figure in an accurate way.

Zahi Hawass is an accredited Egyptologist BUT his claim that Cleopatra VII was Greek completely ignores the simple fact that 250 years had passed since her ancestors had arrived, in Egypt, from Macedonian Greece!

https://www.africanews.com/2023/04/20/egyptian-lawyer-sues-netflix-for-depicting-cleopatra-as-black-woman//

According to Egypt Independent, Mahmoud al-Semary demanded that all legal measures be taken against those responsible for the documentary and the management of the streaming platform for its participation in “this crime.”

The complaint submitted against the streaming platform alleged that "most of what Netflix platform displays contradicts Islamic and societal values and principles, especially Egyptian ones.", Greek city times reported.

Guess what Mr al-Semary, Islam didn't exist when Cleopatra VII was alive and Egypt has an extremely rich indigenous history that pre-dates its Arabification by thousands of years.
room101 · 51-55, M
@Torsten BTW, ever seen a photo of Zahi Hawass?

How would you classify his racial appearance?

I wonder what Mr al-Semary looks like🤦‍♂️
room101 · 51-55, M
@Torsten Here's an image of Adele James from the Netflix TV show. Other than a very slightly darker skin tone, what's the difference between her appearance and that of Mr Hawass?

One other little fact that will undoubtably make your fragile little head explode, Adele James was born in London to a white mother!
