The fact people pretend to not understand the point of the black lives matter slogan is one of the most insultingly idiotic things I've ever encountered in my life.

@CountScrofula That's just a cop-out from actually discussing the real issues.

@afreshstart77 No man, "all lives matter" is a cop-out from discussing real issues.
afreshstart77 · 61-69, M
@CountScrofula Our (UK) fire Brigade put out ALL fires, regardless of the colour of the occupants. Maybe it's a US problem?
@afreshstart77 No, it’s a "you don’t understand" problem. But since you’re in the UK, perhaps you really don’t understand.

@bijouxbroussard I don't think being in the UK is an excuse. I'm in the UK but I get it.

@CountScrofula I think there is a difference between not understanding and not agreeing. I don't think pithy slogans that purport to make one races issues more important than others is helpful and only inspires backlash and resentment.

@SumKindaMunster > that purport to make one races issues more important than others is helpful and only inspires backlash and resentment.

Yeah this is a deliberate, wilful misinterpretation for political purposes. It's intellectually dishonest.
SumKindaMunster · 51-55, M
@CountScrofula So what is it then, if not focusing attention on the issues plaguing a particular race?

And I disagree entirely with this, it's merely a difference in opinion:

this is a deliberate, wilful misinterpretation for political purposes. It's intellectually dishonest
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
@SumKindaMunster Yes but you're wilfully mischaracterizing the argument.

The claim is that black lives currently matter less to the state than those of other races, and this should be corrected so black people are treated equitably and their lives given -equivalent- value to those of other races.

This is a demand for fairness, not for black supremacy.

And the fact I'm saying this is insane. This has been discussed to death for years now, even before the 2020 riots.

You can disagree, but at least honestly characterize the argument you disagree with.

I'm sorry but I don't agree with this. First and foremost I don't agree that Black lives matter less to the state, that is propaganda, we are all equal under the law. Additionally, there are already a multitude of programs, benefits, and give aways available since the 60's that were to address the racial inequalities that occurred between slavery and Jim Crow. It would seem you think they deserve more, and that is perfectly fine by me if you feel that way.

But I don't agree. I also don't appreciate the way you categorize my disagreement as misunderstanding. I understand this concept perfectly, again, I don't agree.

If you feel that this is important, than that are your feelings and I have no issue with them.

But own it bro. You say I am not getting this? I think its you who can't accept that there could be a difference in opinion on this. You seem to believe your feelings should trump my opinion and beliefs. It's not going to happen.

And another thing...

This is a demand for fairness, not for black supremacy.

You aren't talking about fairness, you are talking about equity. If it was fairness, then the playing field would be level and we would exist in a pure meritocracy. That isn't what you are promoting is it? Rather you think Black lives deserve equity, a special leg up, because you believe Black people deserve this for what you believe is their lesser status in society and other societal ills that you feel impact Black lives more.
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
@SumKindaMunster Okay I have to admit, -that's- honest. I've never seen someone argue against equity before.

So you're against general measures of equity? This is a slight tangent but I'm fascinated by this. So for example if you could, you'd eliminate legal requirements for handicapped parking spaces and wheelchair ramps?

Also the law is written equally but not applied equally and I think it's reasonable to care about how things actually work, not how they work on paper.
SumKindaMunster · 51-55, M
@CountScrofula Well at least we can now move past the whole notion that I just don't understaaaaand man. 🙄

I'm not opposed to the concept of equity per se and using it to assist deserving people a leg up. But using a nebulous, politically charged notion such as race to apply such concepts is a dead end for me, sorry. It doesn't really work and you would think just looking at Black Lives Matter actions since they rose to prominence would be a good anecdote upon which to reflect, but I dunno.

As usual, I get the distinct sense that you aren't responding to me in a genuine fashion, but rather constructing purity tests to impose on me, and then act aghast when I don't toe the line to your sense of social justice.
