Ancient Rome — Men worked as farmers, merchants, and soldiers

Vikings— Men fished, hunted, or went on raiding expeditions, bringing back resources

Medieval Europe — Men plowed fields, or served as soldiers

Japan — Samurai and peasant men were responsible for bringing in income through military service or farming.

Early American frontier — Men cleared land, built homes, hunted, and farmed

And my favorite...

Among the Inuit (Eskimo people), whale hunting was one of the clearest historical examples of men providing for their families.

It depends on how far back in the history we are willing to go.

Depends on the culture. But the prevailing western cultures definitely stole autonomy from women. Personally, I always felt like matriarchy would have been more logical. It's pretty damn hard to call into question the maternity of a possible heir - and that question of paternity and inheritance was a large part of that justification.
