"My heart is dead". Well mine isn't, and I will care until the day I die.

If you want to live like a zombie, do that. I don't need to hear your justifications and reasonings. I didn't ask. Join the herd and stfu.

Well, you can't pour from an empty cup. Sounds like that person has been hurt badly enough to where they'd rather feel nothing than take that chance again. Everyone copes in their own ways. Defense mechanisms are just as human as caring is.

They haven't realized that it's impossible to shut themselves off from the entire world. They can certainly try, but it's like trying to avoid the sun. It's a losing battle.

There's a quote I like to bring up in moments of self-defeating rhetoric that helps me put things into context. "You can either get busy living or get busy dying". We all have choices to make everyday that define the life we want to live. We can take the path of cynicism, hatred, and despair, or the path of gratitude, healing, and hope. It seems this person is choosing to wallow in the past instead of moving forward with their life.

It does sound a bit hypocritical wanting to spend the rest of your days caring, but are failing to care about this person's obvious mental health decline. For my 2 cents, I thought it could've been handled more gracefully. Though I suppose I lack a lot of context in that relationship dynamic. Ultimately we're all selective about where we place our energy. It's impossible to care about everything all the time.

@Miram There's always another side to each story. But you're right in suggesting that I've been on both sides. I'd just say that not everyone has someone looking out for them. It's much easier to care when you're being cared for.

My words were intended for someone in the first category of people. You have to learn to care for yourself before you can effectively care for others. Otherwise it's just self-effacing people-pleasing
