We were on vacation in France when they still used the franc. We would always give the waiter a 10 franc coin, which back then was equal to $1.50. They always thanked us profusely as that was considered a big tip!

@fanuc2013 In the mid 60s I had a few extended rotations to Evreux of 2 to 3 months each. 10 Francs then would buy a 5 course meal. It was about a 5 to 1 exchange then, so about $2. Unless you had new $50 cent JFK coins. Europeans adored him and those 50 cent pieces probably could have fetched a sizeable premium.

This is a good question. Because I'm getting tired of it now. I'm getting tired of going to some supermarkets that have a tip added at the end of your credit card bill.
I'm getting tired of restaurants where I've had to spend car fare to travel back and forth to get the food I want. To then have to now tip 2 people just to give me food to take home. Not even to sit there and be Served I'd almost rather deal with the fees and driver tip on a delivery app rather than just even go pick up the food anymore It's cheaper. And I'm finding that I will avoid restaurants that do this. Also I do think I'm a generous tipper I started 18% depending on the service And if I've actually sat down and got served and go up from there.

Great poll on a topic that has always bugged me. I just dont see an option for me on it because I dont tip automatically based on culture for service that I am entitled to get for nothing as a patron.
I only tip for EXTRA services beyond the required bare minimum.
A server providing professional and polite service at a restaurant is doing the required bare min. - to me, that does not get an automatic tip. If there is something exceptional about the server or the service, I tip well.
With no tax on tips, there is even more incentive to not tip just for the sake of culture.

This brings up an issue for food service establishments that prompt the customers for tips up front and provide little or no service beyond handing you the food. We don’t even know where that tip goes, and even if it goes to the staff or not. I would suggest to those establishment that they make a public declaration to how that tip gets distributed.
I tip when I get great service. I tipped yesterday and I must say, very liberally given my expenses, and the lady didn't even say thank you. That really turned me off. 😠 It doesn't take one second to be polite. Money doesn't grow on trees and these days every penny counts! How rude.

I stop going to places like that. Like Panera hits you for a tip when you put your order in. No table service extended. You have to get your own food at the counter when they call your number and they expect you to clean up your own table when done. Basically not much difference than McDonalds or Chick FilA.
Punches · 46-50, F
I avoid restaurants where tipping is expected. It already costs more than the wages of sin for a meal that isn't even that good AND they nickel and dime everything.
What annoys me is that a lot of stores ask for donations for charity. The company is rich, let THEM donate instead of asking customers.

@Punches I'm not making a contribution for a multi billion dollar corporation to write off their taxes.
I do charity but only to organizations vetted through Charity Navigator.

I tip wait staff, delivery drivers, and barbers. That’s about it. I’m not tipping for takeout or counter orders, no matter what the iPads say 😂
HowtoDestroyAngels · 46-50, M
@HiFiRaver Facts, brother, facts.

I am a very generous tipper...20% for seated service at a restaurant...and more if I am impressed. However, I have also had some horrible service, and then I might not leave a tip at all.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
Shareholder value is prioritised over sustainable wages. You (and government) are subsidising the profits of large corporations.
We are familiar with tips in restaurants in the UK, but they are still linked to above average service. Only a handful of fashionable metropolitan establishments try to impose tips.

carpediem · 61-69, M
@SunshineGirl The concept of a tip is to show appreciation for excellent service from an individual. Establishments that “try to impose tips” are exactly what I am against. Maybe it’s an American thing. I’ve noticed that when I am in Europe, very few people tip. Servers are exceptionally thankful and indeed surprised when I do.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@carpediem And it's a really nice thing to do when both parties know that it is deserved.
carpediem · 61-69, M
@SunshineGirl It has to be earned 🙂
Katybe · 31-35, F
They can and in the UK they do. We only tip if we think they have done extra then they are getting paid for.

I tip max 10% at a counter.
Up to 20% if waited on.
I am refusing to tip for products.

i was at a soccer game last night and the cashier's prompt gives me the option to tip them for opening a can of beer for me....i deny it every time....tipped the server at the bar before at least 20% though....she smoked a rocket with me after her shift was done :)~

This reminds me of one of my favorite uncles.
When he left a tip he would hide it under his plate. When I asked why, he said it was because he thought the person who had to clean up the after dinner mess … the dirty work … deserved the tip more than the waiter.

@Heartlander That's why many joints now make the servers bus their own table, something that started in the 90's, they got paranoid that bussers would take the tip.
itsok · 31-35, F
are you tipping based on hair color and piercings?

@carpediem idk why she doesn’t get it lol
carpediem · 61-69, M
@Moneyonmymind She’s entitled to her opinion 🤷🏻♂
metaldog · 51-55, F
Then there's just paying decent wages...
I only tip at casual/fine dining restaurants, and hair salons, not at any fast food joint that already pays their workers $15.00 an hour, I only get $1,400 a month disability, that's way more than what I get, $600 a week is $31, 200 a year, I only get $16,800 a year. Does that seem fair that I should tip someone that makes way more than me after their taxes are taken out?
Moneyonmymind · 31-35, M
Tipping should really only be for delivery or sit down restaurants period.
carpediem · 61-69, M
@Moneyonmymind There are other personal services like massage therapy, barber or food delivery to my residence that I tip for.
Moneyonmymind · 31-35, M
@carpediem hadn’t thought of barbershops
