What signifys a joke?

How can you tell whena person is joking? I believe there a little identifiers that say "what is being said is a joke dont take it serious". Or am i to think every topic or statement is to be taken as a serious thought?

For me anything that makes me laugh is a joke and other things are just statements. I always say "oh thats funny" that way I justify why I laugh
