I think one has to ask which society we are talking about.
If you want to ask about all societies in general, it's a much harder question to answer.
I'd say most people survive and thrive better when we live together as
cooperative and interdependent groups.
One of the chronic problems is the marginalisation of minorities or misfits; the tendency for them to be less well cared for and often bullied.
The greatest difficulties arise when there is conflict over needs and wants,
and an inability to find a solution.
