The Stupidity Of Society

So lets get this right if your under 18 you not old enough to consent to an abortion but you are old enough to have a baby .
If your under18 you cant have sex with anyone over 18 but you can with someone of 18,17,or16 .
At 19 you can with anyone of any age . So in one day you go from one group to another and makes you all of a sudden overnight you suddenly are mature enough .
At 17 you can drive a car but cant drink or smoke , but the day you turn 18 suddenly that all changes and your suddenly mature enough to drink and smoke .
At 16 your old enough and mature enough to join the army and handle a gun but not old enough to drink or smoke .
Am I the only one who thinks this is all completely skewed and the rule book needs torn up and commonsense take over and rewrite the rule book .
When is commonsense going to make a comeback and the madness stop .

Alas a non-insignificant minority of humans can't be trusted with common sense- and generally would walk all over the rest of us and any well-intentioned individual. Call them child molesters, thieves, murderers, republican leaders or multibillionnaires. The law might not be perfect to those who have a strong moral compass, but for those who need boundaries, it's imperative
Rhode57 · 56-60, M
@room10101 I agree but surely simplifying would make that much easier . Draw the line at 1 age . be it 16/17/18 . I am just saying at the moment it makes no sense . My honest thought is it should be 18 . Kids are being forced to grow up far to young nowadays .
room10101 · 36-40, M
@Rhode57 yeah, true. I guess a lot of the nuances/idiosyncrasies of modern law is based on case law, and those situations of a case or series of events regarding groups of people not quite fitting the one-rule-suits-all glove. Some cultures marry young, some believe 12 or first period would be the legal age. And in a multicultural society we have to adapt and understand everyone's perspectives
Rhode57 · 56-60, M
@room10101 I understand that but can also understand why young people get pissed off . In one breath we are telling them their mature at 16 and then we contradict it and say no your not mature till your 18 . Or we make it even more confusing and say your not mature enough to have an abortion till 18 but if you get pregnant at 13/14 your old enough to have the child and raise it . Thats absolute madness.

They have to set a limits somewhere, somehow. Otherwise, "you on the left seem mature enough but you over there on the right don't so you have to wait" becomes a ridiculous nightmare case of discrimination. Rule books stand for a reason. Tearing them up and throwing them away is not common sense.
LadyBronte · 56-60, F
@Rhode57 I guess I don't find it confusing at all. Sex isn't illegal. But sex with a minor is. Laws are in place to keep an adult from sexually taking advantage of a child. Atherefore they had to pick and age and they did. As for handling a deadly weapon, that comes with training. And in most states a license for both gun as well as car. Plus quite frequently, there are additional rules for young drivers like limiting the number of minor passengers or completely prohibiting minor passengers completely, designed to keep an entire group of 16 year olds from distractedly road tripping with friends, etc. Anyway, you and I have a difference of opinion. Which is fine. 🤷‍♀️ Differences are what make us human.
Rhode57 · 56-60, M
@LadyBronte You dont get my drift . Their saying your mature enough to drive a car or use a gun at 16/17 which are deadly weapons in the wrong hands trained or not . However your not mature till 18 to drink or smoke or decide to have an abortion . But if you get pregnant under18 your mature enough to have the child and raise it . I am sorry but no . If your under 18 then abortion is the sensible thing as most are still in education till 18/19 .
LadyBronte · 56-60, F
@Rhode57 Yes. I get your drift. I just don't happen to agree.

Don’t forget these are the rules a government has passed along. Happily most people are more sensible than their leaders and get through this period of our lives just fine.
WintaTheAngle · 41-45, M
@Rhode57 If you’re so worried, what are you going about it?
Rhode57 · 56-60, M
@WintaTheAngle I am but one person . I dont drive I recycle as much as I can and try to do my bit but sadly not everyone does .
WintaTheAngle · 41-45, M
@Rhode57 So long as every one person does their bit, we’ll be just fine.

I'm thinking you're not from the USA? Here the drinking age is 21, and I THINK so is the age for buying tobacco and, in some sates, marijuana. And I believe you have to be 18 to join the military. AND the driving age varies, but in my state they've added a lot of restriction up to the age of 21(or is it 18??).

But, beyond the quibbles -- yeah, it doesn't make much sense, does it?
Rhode57 · 56-60, M
@ChipmunkErnie No I am in the uk but I am glad someone agrees with me . I find the New abortion law in the US just as crazy . How can a girl be too immature for an abortion under 18 but mature enough to have and raise a child under 18 thats ludicrous . Its a child looking after a child and messing up the young girls life if she is still in education . What is wrong with our governments and law makers . I cant believe these jokers are running countries . I just hope that one day commonsense will one day again prevail but its doubtful .

Is there ever going to be a law, that can ever understand life at that age? Sadly, I think most laws written that way are to prevent predatory practices, as we all mature at different points, but instead I wonder it recreates it?

As far as I know, you can have sex with people of any age if you're 16+.
Rhode57 · 56-60, M
@Slade Its bloody crazy lets just call it 18 and let kids be kids till 18 . No drinking , no smoking , no driving cars etc till 18.
SW-User
@Rhode57 In the U.K, which is where we both are, you can have sex with a 16 year old as long as you aren't "in a position of trust". This means that most adults can have sex with someone aged 16-17.

@SW-User I know but then we tell them they cant drink or smoke till 18 and cant drive till 17 and a half . All I am saying is simplify it for all and make it either 16 or 17 or 18 . One age for everything .

Well those laws were based on translating common sense into workable legislation

As for illegal one day legal the next unless you want to have a free for all on children that line, some arbitrary date, is going to have to be the cut off

One of the things which you scoff at was actually an attempted compromise which recognised that at a certain age kids start to play around and you don't want to criminalise that - at the same time young people are vulnerable to being exploited by older adults

🤷‍♀️
