YouTube came up with a way to circumvent my ad blocker... 😟

The only ads I'm getting are for ad-free YouTube though, which is quite ironic and telling. There's two possible reasons for me not seeing any other ads:

1) They don't have any third parties willing to pay them regardless of whether I buy the product, so they can't remove any ads other than their own. That would mean the selling point for an ad-free experience is kinda like "Warning! This sign has sharp edges!"

2) They consider it likely that my ad blocker will catch up very soon and they won't be able to show me enough third party ads before then to generate more revenue than selling me a subscription, which tells me I don't need that subscription.

I'll bet on the second explanation and sit it out for a few days. 😌

@MrSmartyPants I don't think that day will come anytime soon. It's a cat & mouse game and the cats may catch up for a battle, but the mice will always stay ahead in the war.

It may change only if ad blockers become illegal, but that's going to cost lawmakers more votes than it gets them. And even if it gets to that stage, it will be very hard to enforce at scale.

I imagine you will get several bits of advice.

What works for me on my android phone and laptop - Firefox browser with Ublock origin and also sponsor block.
I do not know about other devices or TVs because I do not use the web on a TV set.

Duck Duck Go also shows youtube videos without ads.

One other way even though is it kind of s*lly - send yourself a PM with the link to the video, that used to work for circumventing ads, although it is the least convenient way, especially if you are binging.

I'm still not seeing any with uBlock Origin (thus I can only tolerate watching a full movie on YouTube by attaching the laptop to the smart tv, rather using the tv's YouTube app, which won't allow me to use an adblocker, and volume change between film and advert it just too brutal to keep managing every 10 minutes

The only time I see an ad is if a YouTuber (like Throttle House, works it directly into the script of the content ... see the example below, it's actually kinda funny since the driver suddenly has 4 feet to advertise their shoe sponsor)

It's ironic that seemingly any Chromium-based browser (e.g., Vivaldi) can no longer install adblockers though, as they all depend on the same Chrome store ... they need to develop an alternative extensions repo, they can already do things differently from stock Chromium like using a different file format to store bookmarks, I don't see why a non-Chrome extensions repo seems to be difficult to do ... but I don't keep up with the progress of that since I mainly use Firefox 99% of the time

@SnickersDOM that's strange, my ad blocker runs on Ecosia just fine. It just doesn't work on YouTube anymore for now, but every other ad blocker had that briefly too. They just need to develop a new way to detect them properly, I think. But the extension itself is still installed and works fine on other websites.

I pay monthly to get rid of the adverts as I use YouTube a lot. Makes it so much better.

@OccultCutie I do use it enough to be worth considering too if the ad blocker stops working completely. But that solves it 99% of the time so far.

@OccultCutie paying to get rid of ads sounds like a good idea until we consider that some channels that are total crap are getting paid millions of dollars.

@NerdyPotato Once in a while there will be problems but the adblockers are updated enough to stop ads

I just use AdBlocker Ultimate and another plug-in in Firefox, no ads on YouTube

I got the dreaded 3 videos nonsense the other day. Like, why does my adblocker matter so much if I'm sitting through your crappy ad every video??? I'm still watching your ad... aren't I???
