why do they delete very old films on youtube

old films which you would think were in the public domain now, i really enjoyed watching old films from the 50s and 60s, old black and white films, surely they are all in the public domain now, yet stupid youtube management deletes many of the films!!

There used to be lots of films and music by those now long dead that were wonderful discoveries if you came across them in your research.
I suspect YouTube bought the rights and intends to charge anyone wanting to see/hear.
