Twitter is asking for my phone number to send a text message to verify my account otherwise I can't log in.

I don't want to give my real number, is there a website online that gives a number to allow a text message to be sent to so I can get the code?

They need you to prove that you are responding from the phone that you post from.

I don't know how you can get around it or why you would need to..
Without this kind of security anyone could post to your Twitter account.

@SW-User it is a phone based app but I haven't given them my number. They don't have it.

@TheGoodGuy if you're using it on your phone then they need to know where to send the message so they need your phone number.

@SW-User Yes, but I don't want to give it to them hence why I'm asking if there's an online place which will give me a number where I can send it to and then retrieve the code from their website 🙂

As someone has already mentioned - Twitter needs your number to verify your account. No there is no other way around it. If you're so paranoid, don't get the app. Paranoid people shouldn't use apps.
